Your gonna get a ton of different answers on this one since there are so many good rods that could answer your need. I really like the BPS Extreme rods for the money. Some don't like the hump on the eod handle but I have no problem with it. The rods are well made, fairly light and strong and don't break the bank. Shimano makes some rods that are very nice in the mid price range too. I own a Convergence rod from Shimano which cost me around $60.00 and I love the thing. Lifetime warrenty with the Shimanos too which is a definate plus. It really depends on your specific needs to be able to narrow it down and the price range your looking for. But for best overall that is fairly priced, I'd go with the BPS Extreme rods.Just my 2 cents worth.

Like Keithdog said, answers are going to vary by the ton. Personally my favorite rods for the money are All Star rods. They make a rod for just about anything and they are right around 100$, and most are less than 100$. They are generally pretty sensitive but they are not the lightest rods out there. Also the G-Loomis GL-2 rods are great rods for the price. Sensitive, light, tough, and they are pretty resonably priced between 150$- and 200$.

Specifically or just a ball park guide line?

Ball park guide line, here's what I look for in an everything rod.

MH fast action
6'7 - 6'10" length
at least 6 guides
IM 7 AT THE BEAR MINIMUM graphite.
Blank though handle

If you find a rod with these specs, you're pretty good to go for everything!

I've felt for years that the best rods for the money are the low to mid quality rods in the St. Croix line.

The Triumph Series is about $70. These are what I use for slip bobber fishing for walleyes and panfish.

The Premier Series is about $100-120.

The Avid Series is about $180.

I own numerous of these rods and I don't regret it. Only for technique specific rods where sensitivity is extremely important would I even consider going with a better rod, for example, jigging and worming. Otherwise, these will do just fine.

I have to say for the money Powell. Although I really like Kistler LTA's the most.

For the lower price range I would say Shimano Clarus. List is $69 but you can find them on sale sometimes for $50.
There are a ton in the next level up, $100-150. It would be hard to argue again Powell, St. Croix, Shimano Crucial, etc. etc. etc.

LOL. Almost zero consensus! As expected...
I may have to try these Kistler LTAs. I see the 2009 models are discontinued and discounted heavily, if you can find them.

St. Croix Avids are great for the money. My favorite rod, easily. I think people honestly make too much of a fuss over rods. tons are great, just go pick one that feels right to you.

In the "value" price range (from like $70-120), there are quite a few good rods. This year has seen this market swell considerable with many new rods. Some good ones are the W&M Skeet Reese Tessera, Abu Garcia Vendetta, Shimano Compre, Falcon Bucoo, St. Croix Mojo.

In the $150-300 range, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a rod better than the Shimano Cumara.

Anything over $300 I'd be buying Loomis GLX, Daiwa Steez, or some fancy shmancy JDM rod.

Love my St.Croix Avid 7' for $100 on sale last year, and my Premier 6.6 for the same 100, Also love my Falcon low-rider 6.10 (I think) on sale for 50bucks shipped last year also. Funny thing is, my most expensvie rod Gloomis 7', I don't really care that much for, for 550, paid 250 ebay. Go figure!! BTW all my rods are M to MH, fast action.

Most of my rods are G.Loomis IMX or GL-3's. Most of them were bought used because I'm a pensioner.
I also have several StCroix rods. I like them, but below the Avid line, I think they only have a one year warranty.
Looking at rods in the $80 - $160 range, the Shimano Crucial and Compre rods are very nice. Shimano seems to use quality components, their prices aren't out of sight and their warranty is outstanding.

Kinda strange how St. Croix gives a 5 year warranty to Triumph and Mojo series rods, but only 1 year on Avid and Premier.

http://www.stcroixrods.com/category/...e_and_warranty

The way I look at it though, is that if your rod has defective workmanship, than it is certain to show in the first year. The warranty program that matters is the one that covers the owner who is at fault. G. Loomis and St. Croix both offer programs for replacement after a screw-up, where for $50, your broken rod is replaced, no questions asked, regardless of whether or not you are the original owner.

Loomis calls it the Expeditor. St. Croix, the Gold Star Service Plan. I used the Loomis plan twice last year alone, and on rods that I originally bought used. Both times, I caught the rod on a cleat on my boat when I quickly went to pick it up to make a follow up cast to a missed fish, then the rod snapped like a twig when I set the hook on the fish.

I'm a big fan of Powell Max rods. They are really light and super sensitive. Rods 7' and under are $140, rods longer than 7' are $170. While not inexpensive I think they are a good value. I've also had a couple of All Star rods that were great. The $50 All Star classic that Academy carries is a really good budget rod and the Team All Star line of rods in the $80 range is great too.

Best rod for the " money " to me that means money well spent. It would depend on the application. For instance I would say a Shimano Crucial for crankin but say for a light plastic spinning rod I would go with a St Croix Avid. Also depends on the power and tip action. For xf tips I think the Powells are very decent. If im looking for a casting fast tip rod my Loomis Max has served me well.
