Default Help me buy lures please

Hi all

Found this site a few days ago and have been reading a lot of posts since then - great site!

Have fished bass only socially so far, but would now like to take it a bit more serious. I stay in a fairly small town and I'm going to the city this weekend and while im there want to buy some lures. Have about $100 to spend in your terms (I'm from South Africa). I currently own (dont laugh) Watermelon Super Flukes and a Black Fury small spinner. Thats it, well i caught small bass with both in a pond nearby...

My provisional shopping list looks something like this after studying this site and a few bass articles. Please comment on something to add or on my questions - will appreciate any help.

- Spinnerbaits (best brand and colour?)
- Buzzbaits (brand?)
- Flukes, Brushhog (colour to start with?)
- Deadringers (colour?)
- Lizards (colour?)
- Top Water Baits (I need help here, saw the names Zara Spook and poppers - dont even know what they are)
- Hard baits (can get Rapala's and Rebel but there are so many different ones, if i can afford about 5 which ones would u recommend)
- Any other I should give a try?

For spinnerbaits, I would personally go with strike king or bass pro shops spinnerbaits. Good quality for the prices.

For flukes I would try them in baby bass color, they have worked well for me.

Lizards, ZOOM makes good ones, and YUM zellamanders are nice. As for color, I have had best luck with Browns, orange, and green colors.

Which I could say something about the other baits you mentioned, but I am pretty new to fishing myself.

GO GET MORE MONEY YOU'RE GONNA NEED IT ;D Since you stated you're relatively new, then I wouldn't go buy all of the different kinds of baits at once, I would buy several bags of plastics, ie Lizards(all black), worms, flukes, zipper style, cut tail, senko type, with weights for these. I would also buy a couple of spinners, chartreuse/white double blades(1 colorado, and 1 willow leaf). Get yourself some PNJ combo also. I would definately get some topwater baits also(nothing as exciting as topwater action . The easiet to learn are the Buzzbait, which is just a straight retieve(till you get better), and a Jitterbug which can be retrieved with stop and go, etc, but not much rod action. These of course just my opinions, and someone else may say something different. But until you learn a few of the different baits, and can have confidence in them to catch fish, you will just keep changing lures constantly. Also LOU is from South Africa also, he would probably be the most help, since at least he's on the same Continent.

if i was asked i would say it like this "ask lou" he is in s.a. and knows the colors that work in your lakes and rivers.
a spook is a twitching bait that floats on the surface and ya twitch it or jerk it during the retrive.
a pop-r is like it's name says ya jerk it and it spits water out the head of the lure. with both baits it just takes practice on finding the right jerk/twitch rythum.

as for cranks a shallow shad rap #7 in shad or firetiger colors
a regular shad rap #5 in both colors. this should cover just about all of your fishing needs.

tinusp, first off, Welcome to the Forum! Â*Glad you joined us.

Your question has as many different answers as there are fishermen, as you can already tell. Â*So, I'll add my $.02.

Spinnerbaits:
there are a lot of different brands out there, and I have caught bass on the $.99 bargain bin to the expensive titanium models. Â*Since you are just getting started, rather than worry about brand I would concentrate on size and colors:

3/8 oz white with silver blades-if you are in REAL clear water get a double willow setup, if not get a tandem-a round (Colorado) blade with a willow blade. Â*I would also get one with some chartreuse in the skirt and a gold blade for cloudy days, and finally one with a big, single Colorado (round) blade for muddy water.

Buzzbaits: Â*White for day and black for night. Â*Brand does not matter.

Flukes-watermelon red flake and Smokin' shad to go with your watermelon ones.

Other soft plastics-watermelon seed, watermelon red flake, green pumpkin and red shad. Â*For me watermelon red flake is my favorite all around color.

Topwaters:

A Zara Spook:

A cigar shaped bait that is worked with twitches of the rod tip-the bait is about 4 inches long.

Popper:

Great topwater bait. Â*Work it with twitches of the rod tip so it "bloops" in the water. Â*Shad colors work great.

Another great topwater is a Tiny Torpedo:

I've probably caught more topwater bass on this lure than any other. Â*Chrome/black back is my best color.

Crankbaits:
For colors I would go with a shad color, a chartreuse/blue or chartreuse/ black, and if you have them in your lakes a crawfish color. Â*The length of the bill determines how deep it runs, so I would vary the length. Â*Not knowing the area you will be fishing I would go with shad colors.

One bait no fisherman should be without is a lipless crankbait like a Rat-L-Trap:

Chrome/blue or chrome/black back are tough to beat.

Hope this gives you a little better idea. Â*One other thing no fisherman should be without is a hook sharpener of some kind. Â*If your hoiok is not sharp enough to dig into your fingernail it needs to be sharpened. Â*You can get a stone, a small file, but I like a diamond sharpener:

Not expensive but well worth the investment.

Check your messages up at the top of the page-you have one.

Hey, tinsup,-
Fishing is the best thing to take up in life, that is for sure! I have found some of the best baits in the world ( i always pick them up every trip to Walmart) to be the H & H double spinnerbait and the Johnson's Beetlespin.(dont buy the one with the plastic head- it doesnt swim right) They are very inexpensive and i always carry extras with me. Mostly on the spinnerbaits i like the black/white H & H and the blk/yellow beetlespin. Never had a problem catching fish on either one of them. -

you got watermelon superflukes, is there anything else you need? Â*jk, they're my favorite lure probably. Â* Listen to what reb said he's pretty smart, but to ad a little, heres a few more lures you should have:

some jitterbugs, just reel them slow across the surface for a plop-plop action

some worms, red shad or junebug will do, texas tigged with some bullet-weights, and you just bounce it off the bottom

and a few senkos maybe, just throw it out there wightless around brushpiles and structure and let it sink.

Besides that, if you're using superflukes already, you're doing good.

PimpinAngler

Im 25 and have been fishing all my life. Mostly carp fishing in the South African way (not specimen/boilie fishing) catfish etc. Only recently got very interested in bass fishing. Its so much easier as you just need to take your rod, lures and go. The SA dams did not have as much bass 10 years ago, but now you can try almost anywhere...

Thx for all the help everyone!

Never got to the tackle shop last weekend (got stuck in the casino... at least now i can buy a few more lures )

So we went to another dam yesterday after work. Apparently huge bass but noone able to catch them so with everything i've read on this site i decided to give it a go. But no luck! Saw some catfish swimming around but but they take nothing too...

The three of us each bought a local brand spinner bait from a local tackle store. Cheap but all 3 broke within 10 minutes. Cant believe someone sells such crap. Surely have not tested them, think i can make something better with some wire and a piece of pliers... Will get some proper ones when i get to a decent tackle store.

At least got a Rapala original floater from the local store, tried it with a few retrieves but no luck (not sure what is the right way, if there is one...). So we're going back to the other pond tonight. At least im outfishing my friends with everything i read here - they say im just lucky...
