Default Same size crankbaits/different size fish

I've found that the same type/size and depth crankbait CAN catch different size fish.
I've got some that catch only small fish
some that catch medium size fish and some that are good for large fish.

Before i started painting all my lures i had a favorite crankbait that i had about 6 of same size same color same brand same model. 2 out of those 6 were outstanding fish catchers and the others were average. Even in mass produced baits sometimes there is something about one that just makes fish go nuts.

I have also noticed the fish size thing too, i have some baits i throw in tournaments when i need a limit and some i only throw when im hunting for a kicker fish.

i have said this before but in massed produced crankbaits finding the crank that will catch fish when a differant crank bait -exactly the same-wont is a true gem and worth useing to death which would explain the couple of hundred i don't use kicking around the barn.

The 90 % of those that don't work well are great for Christmas gifts.
Especially to those who you fish against.

Zook,
I hope the bucket is empty. I'll fill that thing up for you with "great" crankbaits.

Poor 'ol Ricky. I'm sure that he'd appreciate those "great" crankbaits.
If he uses one of my cranks that I never have caught a fish on, then that would be ok with me.
I could scratch it up for him so he'd think that it really is good. Or just drop it in his tackle box (when he wasn't looking of course). He'd think that someone had just lost an incredible bait.

maybe someday i'll give these couple hundred cranks i have a try .don't even know what i was thinking when i bought them.maybe they just looked good at the time.
i have absolutely no confidence in crankbaits.
therein lies the problem.it's a vicious cycle.i have no confidence so i don't throw them, and if i don't throw them i can never get any confidence in them.
a true fishermans dilemma.

Zook,

It's the same for Excaliber and Bomber.
Same crank different size bass.
Fished the other day at Tillery and on my old faithfull I caught a good keeper right off the bat.
In nervousness, I switched crankbaits (for fear of loosing my good one) I only caught one small fish with the newer one.
Didn't feel the same or dive quite as deep.May go into my "gift" bait box !

Bassman you said it yourself. Maybe the bait didn't go deep enough. Maybe the wiggle was a little different. Just cuz one didn't work today doesn't mean it wont work tomorow.

I tune my cranks to perfection. Even David Fritts would be proud of my well tuned baits. When ever possible I use a swimming pool to see how they react.

Whenever I catch several good fish from 2-3 lakes then I consider that bait good. When I catch only small bass on a different crank bait (same size, same shape, same color)I consider it not as good.
Right now I've got about 20-25 good cranks. I've got about 100 or so that are strickly practice baits. If I can catch only small bass with the practice baits, then that tells me that maybe there's some bigger fish in the general area.

il
take it from me. here in the piedmont of nc 95% of all fishermen are perfectionest when it comes to crank baits. i have 2 boxes of cranks about 30 in each one. i have anchored up on a set depth area. and throw every new bait just to see what depth it will attain. for example: if i throw 10 differant crank baits all made by the same company -say an badit 200- only 3-4 will actually reach the depth they claim. while i also tune my cranks very well. of the 3-4 that run at 8 feet i fish them even the same color on 3 differant lakes. if i tend to catch bigger bass on only one crank bait that one bait makes it into the tourny box. all of my baits normally have a small mark on them some where.
the rest of the 3-4 are put in the practice box. these baits are fished much more often.as for the baits that don't makethe cut well i have removed over 500crankbaits from my barn and have sold some or given many away ask flbassman he will tell ya that. and that is just this year alone. i normally start culling baits in may.
