High School Fishing
I have heard as im sure you guys have too that a state up north (maybe Illionois) has now made a high school sport out of fishing. This is GREAT. I wish South Carolina had fishing as a sport so me and my friend could destroy all over the state. This would be a great oppurtuntiy for many people all over the country to bring kids to fishing.
I just wanted to say good job to the people who got this passed and wondered what you guys thought about it. I think i might write someone about it. Maybe a superintendent or something. |

Dunno about fishing but Arkansas Has a High School Rodeo Association.
We traveled all over the state, and surrounding states when I was in school to ride bulls. It was nice to even get out of school like the football players on fridays for a long trip. |

I, too, wish our school had bass fishing. I would just bring my homework out on the lake and fish with all my friends.

Which organization you looking to join? FLW or BASS? Both have youth organizations that you can join. Contact the Youth Director for your state (Federations are the place to start) to get the requirements. BASS have bylaws and community service requirements. FLW isn't as structured but has some requirements as well.

Most of the guys on the team don't own boats. Only a couple of them. We fish small local ponds if we can and we do fish from shore for fun tournaments too. The State Qualifying events and Championships have volunteers who bring their boats.

Fishing ponds with no boat - length tournament.
Fishing ponds with boats - normal weigh in. Fishing SQ's - they'll have more elaborate weigh in like the bigger tournaments |

Yep. Pretty much. We started out with small tournaments but after a year or so you can invite other teams out to fish against you. Charge $5 per entry and buy some prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd or get some donated by a local tackle shop or company. You should check out the Orange County (Virginia not NY or Cal.) team website (it's down right now but will probably be back up soon) and see what they've done over the past 5 years. They've got one dedicated teacher who helps them out. Over the years they've picked up Triton as their main sponsor. They do a show in their gym in March. They are involved in conservation. It's a huge program. They'd be the ones to contact about starting a program. Their principal and superintendant are huge supporters of the program too.

hmm.. i guess there arent any in SC.. so we'd have to do all the set-up stuff.. unless BASS or FLW does the hard work for us.. just joining and finding other teams to join..
i'll run the word by our principal tomorrow... we got a Sporting Clay team last year.. pretty cool...

I believe it as Illinois. I wish ohio would do that, I'd joind a bass team immediately.
We've got a trap team too. we've also got an equestrian team, so why not fishing. A catholic school in toledo has a fishing club. BB

Find out if there is a Youth Director for the organizations in your state. They organize all the big tournaments. Your team does the small local things. If you get a teacher to sponsor the team then you're set. Pay your dues, about $20, and elect the officers and set your spring schedule. Not too tough to do.

if i had bass fishing as a sport in highschool i would have flunked out. it was all i could do not to think about fishing in algebra. but if i had it as school curriculum i would not think about anything but that. baseball was bad enough.

C'mon bassin' and high school go together perfectly.
Math - Got to calculate how much you make mowing the lawn and how much the bait monkey is going to take from you and still see how much you have left over for lunch. Science - Biology especially with the life cycle and food sources of the largemouth. Physics you would learn to pitch a bait up under a dock and place it without a ripple. Health/PE - You got to be able to balance in those three footers and you need a little first aid after you yank that treble out of your hand. And how do those little sausages all fishermen eat affect the digestive system (might be a Biology question too)? Drivers Ed - Got to be able to back that trailer down to launch the boat. Got to have that license! English - Learn great words like hawgmollie and read classic books like Henshall's Book of the Black Bass. History - BASS and FLW have great histories. Some greatest men in US history were fishermen too. Ol' George W. lived on both the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers. Geography - Get to check out all those great rivers and lakes across the US. |
