Default Gary Yamamoto Fat Ika's?

Has anyone had first-hand experience fishing Fat Ika's? If you do, I'd be very appreciative for ways of rigging and fishing them.

Fat Ika's are awesome baits! I fish them weightless but the key is to rig them backwards. When rigged tx style from the skirt side it falls away from you, towards any fish that might be chasing it.

Ika's and specifically fat Ika's are a bait that I always have tied on. I believe that JRob nailed it when he said to rig them backwards.
While I almost always throw them weightless, I will sometimes add a nail weight. I prefer to keep it off center because this makes the fall a little more eratic. This has triggered many bites when tossing them into laydowns.
The one thing I will say is that you need a 3/0 of 4/0 hook. I have seen too many fish lost with a smaller hook.

They're a really cool bait with a good gliding action. You can cast em a mile, even with no added weight.

I just printed and read all that Russ Bassdozer wrote about the Fat Ika, it's larger brother the Big Ika and various rig's including the weightless ones mentioned above. His articles include excellent photos of each rig including the Backwards rigs... After I read them, I spent WAY TOO MUCH money at tacklewarehouse.com on them as well as the even newer Damika Hydra..!! WAY COOL BAIT and I can't wait to throw em at Canadian Smallmouth in Quebec this June.

Henslayer, can you post the links to those articles (for those of us who are too lazy to go and find them ourselves. ) And the Damiki Hydra does look really cool.

Seeing the new Hydra, and now this thread has gotten me interested in these.

So how do you guys fish them?

Agree, a great bait. Recently on the Potomac nothing seemed to work well, so I threw a black/blue fleck Fat Ika on a 4/0 hook with no weight and 14lb BPS Floro and bingo. They loved it. I have fished it backwards with success, but that day was a regular configuration.

Very cool looking baits for sure! Wondering how you guys fish them weightless though? Kinda like a senko I'm guess?

Just toss it out and let it sink. I then hop it back to the boat. It usually is gobbled on the way back. Sometimes I just dance it in place.

T-Rigged backward, weightless, and fished just like a Senko.

Could anyone please post a pic of the Fat Ika? I'm looking through my BPS and Cabelas books to check them out and can't seem to find one listed in either.

Cool Fat Ika's

BigBassin144, Sorry but I don't know how to post a link to the Russ Bassdozer Articles about Rigging and Fishing Yamamoto Big Ika's and his EXTENSIVE articles on Senko rigs and retrieves. But they make for very interesting reading for sure. I will admit that I have read all of them multiple times. Go to Bassdozer.com and search in the Archive section of Articles and you will find a veritable cornucopia of reading on ALL THINGS BASS FISHING! I'm not taking anything away from this site, But my eyes started to burn I was reading so long... I am just GIDDY about tossing these weightless on Russ' recommended hooks along with Shaky Heads for these unsuspecting Smallmouth.. LOL! It's gonna be SO cool. I've learned so very much from that site and I've been an Avid Bass Fisherman since I was about 14 years old and now I'm 50 freekin years old.. O.M.G. am I old.
