Default Why a bead? Frog?

Why do people put a bead on the nose of their frog baits like the horny toads? What purpose does it serve....I think it is to protect the knot but is there anything else or do I even have it right. Frogs are one bait I am going to give a better shot next year...my lakes are loaded with them.

bpaca
i never used a bead last year while using a frog..i have 2 CASES-48 packs per case- of horny toads -went thru a case and a half this summer- key to frogs is quite simple long stout rod, braided line, fast reel..

i used a 7'6'' flippin stick this summer but found it to be heavy-tiring- to twitch and pop. i am getting a fenwick hmx frog stick heavy action springy fast tip. i used a diawa advantage lefty reel-think it was a 6.4- and 40 pound braid. i was moving the bait at a quick speed thru/over our grass much like a weedless buzz bait..
the whole point of the long rod was leverage. when a bass hits a frog they nail it. you have to drag them out of the grass they can and will burrow into it and wrap you up.. i like to keep my rod tip at 10-11 oclock with a frog this gives you a monmentary pause prior to the hook set to get the rod down point the tip at them and do a MASSIVE hook set. the hook set does 2 things sets the hook and yanks the fish out of the cover. my best was a 7.4 pounder that after the hook set dove and wund me up in the grass -actually had to cut the grass around this big fish to get him free- alot of pros recomend a 5/0 ewg super braid hook i do NOT. i like a 4/0 ewg super braid hook. make a cut between the toads legs and it fit like a glove. this is much more weedless. though a tad more miserable to rig.

remember the frog RARELY last more than 2 fish..

bpaca,
you may be trippin,
no need for a bead,
when you go flippin
a # 4/0 hook does the deed
to cross her eyes when you set the hook
comes from experience, not from a book
so go out now and set up a horny toad
ease it over the milfoil, get ready to unload
when you see the blow up, don't be lookin fer no bead
then wait a second before ya cross her eyes
and thumb her at the boat, knowing ya took the lead

I don't know either, I remember talking to Jim and he said he includes some with his. I then told him about the hooks he offers now, and he doesnt' do the bead thing anymore. I never thought to ask him why!

A future aspiring rapper. We could call you FROGGY B or Froggy J or JB Spinner or JB the Spook. Redneck rappin, could be a new trend. Oh yeah, never heard of a bead on a frog.

As Rebbasser mentioned, the bead on a Carolina rig to protect the knot and add noise from the brass and glass clacking together. JB, you definately got way too much time on your hands. Go back and correct dead to deed. P N J

Zooker, Why are you spending so much on frogs ? Buy a scum frog trophy series and be done with it until the hooks are almost gone from sharpening them in between multiple fish.Spro Rojas frog made a smaller sized frog. What was the purpose of that ? the original wasn't too big, just over priced. P N J

Hey Zooker, I've never heard of making a cut in between the frogs legs. Sounds like a good idea. I'm going to try that one. But man oh man, I know the frogs not gonna like that one bit!!!!

which reminds me...
See the school I'm in is great fun and I love everyone there. So, i took a song by The game called "Let's Ride/ Strip Club" into "Let's Write/ Math Club"
It is going to be insane! already changed the lyrics, they are pretty good. And I wrote my favorite teacher a part... He is crazy but i don't know if he'd do it. We will be shooting the music video in school, I got plenty of ideas. I'll make sure to put up a link when I'm done with it (in the Non- Fishing section, of course)
P.S. vote me top spot at google, please!

I started using Stanley Ribbits this summer. A bead is supplied in each package and the package says it improves the performance of the Ribbit, but doesn't say how or why. I've never used the bead.

MY reason for using the bead? Well, the bead will often prevent the frog's nose from being pushed down on the hook when bringing it through thick cover. It eliminates the need for gluing the nose to the eye or offset.
I will occasionally use two beads so that a jerky and erratic retrieve will cause a clacking effect...be certain to use GLASS beads for this.
If you check at a hobby/craft store, such as Michael's (San Antonio) you'll find far more colors and *sizes of beads than you will in tackle stores or websites. I carry an array of these for adding a tad of noise or pizzazz to soft plastics so well as using them on the ZOOM-type toads 'n frogs.
BTW, I switched from ZOOM Horny Toads to the Ribbit frog. Why? Well, the Ribbit makes more noise and throws more "wake", it is slotted nicely on the back to help prevent snagging, and it accepts a smaller hook (I usually use a G-Lock or Superline.)

FR
Shhhhhh! Be vewy, vewy quiet. I'm hunting da Wibbit.

*Be certain to "eyeball" the hole in the bead, before you buy, so as to ascertain whether your particular line will pass through it.
I have NO trouble getting #30 braid through, but some heavier monos might stall.

Fly, if you like the Zoom hook, check Ghostbaits hook out, it's the same exact hook as Zoom, as well as my jigs, I passed that little bit of info on to him, saves everyone a bit o' money if they go that route

I agree with Zooker on the durability. I prefer Scum frogs as well b/c you can fish them all day and if they get tore up you can always glue or melt them back together to keep the water out.

As far as the bead goes if will protect the knot and may give noise off, I've also heard and utilized beads inside the body of the Scum frog to create an interior rattle as it's jumping over the surface to help the bass find the target.

me too, I've had luck catching aligators with that frog.........a 14 footer, had some fun getting dragged around in my 9 foot jon boat. the gammy hook held up just fine and the frog only managed to get a small hole in it.

FlyRod nailed it. I've been fishing the Stanley Ribbit all year and I've become the Rojas of my bass club, because of the amount of use and success with it. The bead does help if your pulling the ribbit through matted grass and pads and keeps Kermit from slipping down on the hook.

Yeah, Stanley is the only ones I know that do it. There are probably some other "mom and pop" lure companys that do it.

Did you know that Reaction innovations actually designed and made the frog and then sold it to Stanley who named it Ribbit frogs ?They still make a Swamp Donkey frog bait which is supposed to work well, but I haven't bought one yet. P N J http://www.landbigfish.com/tacklesto...e.cfm?PID=3538
