where are the fish in the northeast? i caught one smallmouth today, and very unfortunately i kilt it when i was getting the hook out, i truly regretted that. however, i decided to gut it and see what was in the digestive system. the best i could determine was small bugs, parts of crawfish, and it appeared that he was starving as the contents were sparse in his stomach. small wonder he hit a flyrod hula popper. it was the only one that hit. are they deep? shallow? any insight on anything?
i live in western maryland. |

Scrap, if you are liveng in Western Md in the mountainous area, it's probably real cold there and the water temp is down in the 40ts. The fish are slow and you want to dig deep with a Texas rig. Try using a 3/16 bullet wt and work it verry slow, pulling the worm very slow over the structure. and let it fall and work it sloooow. Usa a jig and fish it slow also. I would say "slow" is the key there in western Md at this time of year. Good luck and I hope you catch that hawg that you've been lookijg for. RS

You can do that or fish a dropshot worm on a 1/ 4th once weight and throw it along deeper banks. This is what is producing for me now and it is much more effective in my opinion than a jig or a t rig for cold water. I fished for a couple of hours today and they hit the Drop rig and rattle traps only. Couldn't get a bite on anything else. Fish the windy banks also.

river stumps is right, fish slow and deep. i live in northern va. and thats the only way to catch them when it this cold. i use a few different things like slug-gos, senkos, and the texas rig. texas rig gives me the most luck. but of course i hardly catch any thing at the closest lake, it is so often fished that the fish have seen it all, it is hard to fish!!! if one thing dont work, try another.
