Just a tip for spawning bass
As usual, can be taken with a grain of salt. Our spawn has been pretty weird this year. Our 2 local lakes are well known for producing around late Jan - mid Feb barring the warm fronts. But we went out a couple of weeks ago and I saw a few from the ramp. The game warden was off duty and flipping on a male and I asked him if they were still bedding and he said they flooded the bank in mid Jan to be pushed off pretty quick and the water was just getting back to 62. I asked if he was having any luck and he said he had caught the male several times. And then he proceeded to tell me the tip. I have hooked a few fish on the bed, but never back to back. Anyways, he asked if I had any larger hair jigs and I said no, why, did they introduce small mouth in here thinking sarcastically to myself. He went on to tell me that with rubber, the fish can grip it with their nubs and tote it off, leading to a lot of those empty hooksets. He said the hair is harder to get a hold of so they usually will mouth the whole thing to get it out of the bed. Just some FYI to run on and hear the thoughts of the masses.

That makes a lot of sense. I know I've had them move soft plastics 2 or 3 feet outside the bed, never fully taking the bait.

That's a really great tip. I think I'll look into picking up a couple hair jigs to try out. I had a few years ago, but don't have any now.

Check out this hair jig at BPS. Don't the weed guards look familiar?

So I got to ask.
Has anyone tossed an 1/8 oz jig or smaller on a bed? With any skirt? plastic/hair Howed it work out? Bubba, how large of 'jigs' was the warden using? Was the jig rig a go to bed bait or a follow up for stuburn bass? Did he eliminate a trailer all together or use a trailer on his rig too? If yes, what type of trailer? Thinking a small paddle tail grub may work but then won't a trailer eliminate the advantage of a 'hair jig'? Great share and advice Bubba!

He was using a 3/8 - 1/2 oz depending on wind. The hair was trimmed maybe an 1/8" off the hook. No trailer was used because that would defeat the purpose of giving them the advantage of having something to nip.
He said it was all he used for bed fishing.

hair jigs are not really utilized like they should be. one of the reasons that they are hard to find to buy, is because of labor costs to tie them. i tie my own and use hair all the time. hair is great early in the spring of course, but it is also great to be throwing in the summer when bass are in a shad eating mode. because of the slimmer profile that hair presents, a hair jig coupled with a slender trailer resembles a shad, and will catch bass when a rubber skirted jig will not.

That's an interesting tip. It's one of those things that makes sense and makes you wonder why you never thought to try it. Bedding fish will be showing up here really soon, I'll give it a shot.
