I've read this before. I think avoiding a human scent is more important than adding an artificial scent. That's why you'll also hear people say to oil/gas your boat the night before, and wash your hands with odorless soap before baiting your hook.

I read somewhere that bass can detect the smell of like 1/200th of a drop of something in 100 gallons of water.

Definitely changed my view on washing up before fishin.

Welcome to the forum!

I remember a recipe in Bassmaster from several years back. If I remember right take 1/2 a jar of Vaseline and melt it in a pan. Add a couple ounces of liquid garlic (you can get it at the grocery store) and then add some rock salt. Pour it in a jar, let it cool and you are good to go. I haven't tried it, but it makes sense.

zookers correct on the garlic after spawn, this weekend proved it..I fished several dif. lakes and worked areas over with plastics without
carolina lunker sauce in Garlic, caught a few here and there, then kept the boat in the same areas each time and this time used the same plastic with garlic and got bite much quicker and they all had weight.
Its something anglers have used for over 30 years (salt too) before they put it in the plastics...try it today!

I did it and it worked awesome. I also did it with crawdad scent. Then the tubs they were in opened in my tackle bag.

Not old school, just a little sarcastic. I don't really like old spice, I was just getting my point across. You men talk more about spices than us women. It was good readin though.

The garlic is working awesome lately for me, and they're still spawning. I'm sticking with my theory about it working best in vegetation. IT DOES WORK!!!

get a bottle of cold pressed liquid garlic from www.garlicvalleyfarms.com and use a couple spritzes in each baggie of soft plastics.....it's water based and penetrates the plastics...also contains salt. Comes in an 8 ounce bottle and including shipping runs 7 dollars. Excellent and potent stuff.

Onion work good to, just dice some up, and put in the bait bag, let it sit for a day.
I think it masks our smell, and don't ask me how bass know what we smell like.
That may be why Berkley gulp works, it hides our smell?

I also bought some "The Worm" (that's what it's called). Got it a Walmart, It's sented with raspberry, and I got a lot of bass on them.

Just tie on some gizzard shad, you can't smell shat besides that for a while.

but in all seriousness I use anise scent all the time for steelhead, it works wonders.

Off topic, but in my younger day, when catfishing I would take chicken livers, toss them in a blender. then dump that into a zip lock bag with cut up sponge, put in the sun for a day. Hook the sponge in the hook, it stays on the hook much better, and has the same stink.

Not a bad idea BFWNY, I fish livers all the time for channel cats, but I think the texture is a big part of the equation. I wrap mine in magic thread once they are on the hook, and always have the best luck with fresh liver. The best catfish bait IMHO is crappie guts, oh yea baby!

well, since we're all posting in the old thread... here it goes.

I normally don't use scents, but today, while chewing gum, I decided I didn't want mint on my line, so I lubricated my knots with YUM Garlic scent.
