Keith, I throw them on 12 lb. !4 is a little heavy for my taste and 10 is too light for me. 12 fits the bill perfectly. I may not get as deep, but I know I can get a fish in on 12.

Thats what I was thinking myself Reb. There isn't much difference in line diameter between 10 and 12, so I would feel better about the added strength of 12 pound test. You might gain another foot going with 10 pound, but will you really? And even so, would 12 inches make any difference most days? I doubt it. I'm sure there are some who would argue that point, but my gut instinct tells me if a bass is willing to strike a large crank tipping his nose, he would lurch 12 inches to take one just above him. It's still an easy distance for a prediter to get a meal.

For my Crankin Stick (Which I use for all cranks right now), I use 10 lb. If I got a bigger Crankin' Stick, I'd go with 12. Ten might have a little too much give for these bruisers!

Talking crankbaits

KEITHDOG, BPS is having their spring fishing classic the first 3 weeks off march. Sometimes they have some good deals. BUT BEWARE THERE IS BAITMONKEYS EVERYWHERE. Check their website. Good luck.

The bait monkey got me today. While sitting home here mending from the flu, I took the time and ordered my deep cranks from The Tackle Warehouse. Looking foreward to trying these. No doubt I'll add to my collection of big deep divers when the mood strikes me, like every time I'm at BPS or Cabelas. But for now, here's what I bought so far. All Bill Norman DD22's
1. DD22 in Green Joe Scale, a really great looking bait!
2. DD22 in Chartruese/Blue back
3. DD22 suspending model in white/black green fleck. another great looking color.
While I was at it I picked up a Yozuri Rattl'n Vibe lipless crank in red with black back.
Can't wait for spring to get here and get back out there. Ugh, it's snowing again!!!

Shallow cranks as in Lipless? For my "shallow" cranks, DT4's, SubWarts, Original Rapala's, I go with 10 lb.

You have a 19' tackle box because you have been caught and released many times. The last to release me was the Cabelas store in Dundee,Michigan.

I did see a color available from The Tackle Warehouse that looks great to me. It's called Green Joe Scale. You might want to check that one out.

Keith, you got the #97 nailed, the black splatter back is #39, I can't find the color pattern for the clown colored one in the BPS catalogue, I remember getting it at one the local Academy Sporting Goods Stores in Texas. I will go check out that Green Joe Scale. The other color that has worked well for me this past month in just about all of the depths is the Sour Grape #74. Sour Grape got me a second place finish on Lake Sinclair a couple of weeks ago under post frontal bluebird skies and dingy/cold water. It's been working pretty well in the clearer water on Allatoona as well.

PnJ I saw the hooks right away (about 5 minutes ago), but I discovered you already answered your own question (about 6 minutes ago)

Me too. Deep, medium, shallow, lipless and DD-22. Throw in a jerkbait rod and that makes 6.

Keithdog, let me know what you think of the suspending models. Now you got the bait monkey fired up .

Bob Smith, I wished you would have gave me some insight as to whether it was ok to downsize the hooks. I have caught fish with the stock hooks on it and the downsized hooks on it. probably should stop thinking about trying to adjust the hook size for smallmouths and put the original hooks back on it? p n j

Keith, my apologies, Bubba. The truth is I have never ever downsized my hooks. If anything, I always up the size of the front treble on most of baits, especially my Rattletraps, basically a fast moving bait. You improve your hook up ratio by upping the size of the hook. It's works on the same principle of using a trailer hook on spinner baits!

No problem at all Bob. By the way, if you go to the web site for The Tackle Shop, you can get a good look at the color Green Joe Scale.
