I'd say anytime the bass are schooling up shad or bluegills or whatever they are feeding on in your lake. Try to mimick a injured fish, that may get a strike, reel and stop, try various speeds of retrieve, then if you do get a strike you'll know what to keep doing until the pattern changes.
Esp. effective in the fall when bass are feeding on shad .

Ive never thrown a swim bait. But i have fished the shad bodies on lighter jigs with over sized hooks and done well. I may be wrong but im guessing about the only real difference between a shad body/jig combo versus a swimbait is the lead head is not exposed on the swim bait.
I wonder if any of the Cali bassers use anything similar to a clip on type spinner bait arm added to those monster baits. It probably couldnt be a clip on but would rather have to be something similar to one.

zooker,
Does the pointer float up when stopped or sink?
I was wondering about bumping into timber and then letting the crankbait
backup and float up, before the next retrieve....
whats the big disadvantage to the swim bait around timber?

I agree, they don't work good in tree limbs.

pointers both float and sink/suspend depending on which one you are using. swim baits hang up on every hunk of tree the come to..

Ive noticed in some of the pictures it looks like a 12 lb. bass tried to eat a 4 lb. swimbait.
