Default Question for BABABASSMAN

Hey bama, I read where, on another post, you said that a stabillizer (wing) can do harm to an outboard engine. Could you please elaborate a little more on this matter as I have been running a StingRay stabillizer on my 175 Merc. for years now and I certainly don't want to do any damage.
Thanks, Bill

well champ.....it is only a tempeoray fix really. there are only a couple of these things that are designed for use forever. i read it here really. there is some comments on here somewhere where we ahd some really good infomation on what these things do to your rig. from what i can remember, most folks use these to get on plane faster. if oyu have oyur motor set up properly to begin with and the correct prop, getting on plane is gonna be there. i am NOT the best at digging through the threads to find this infomation for oyu. sorry. i just remember that some MOTOR EXPERTS from this site told us what to get and what NOT to get as for these stabilizers. now someone here who is much better at finding these threads can and probably will dig it up for us.

i don't have one and i won't put one on my rig. i am happy with what i got. but i understand that some wil use this on an undersized motor to make it seem to go faster and plane quicker. not a good idea as i recall.

wish i was better at this digging up threads bill. hopefully ol mb or bb144 can dig it up for us.

I also don't see a downside to a hydrofoil.

They're out of the water when level on plane.

At least mine hasn't caused me any troubles.

Maybe it has something to do with the increased pressure on the lower unit... just a thought. I wouldn't think that it could cause any problems considering how a lower unit is attached but I can't say for sure.

I could see this in theory if it were pulling down on the lower unit. However, it's trying to push the lower unit up at the block. Effect on the transom maybe?

Possibly, I'm pretty sure it has somthing to do with the pressure the hydrofoil creates, but on a boat that's well built I couldn't see it cracking the transom.

Your right about it pushing up at the block... didn't think that through.
