Default Line for crank baits

I've been getting into throwing big crank baits the past few years and wanting them to go deeper and deeper. Line diameter has a part in the diving dept so I was wondering what line I could use to get my baits alittle deeper. I know Berkely vanish has a smaller diameter, but what else could I use? Fire line and braid are very low in diameter, but are they to low stretch for crank baits?
Thanks fishn'fool

Welcome to the forum!

With cranks I WANT stretch-that and a medium action rod helps keep the hooks from plling out of the fish's mouth. I use 12 lb green Trilene XL for lipless crankbaits and 10 lb for lipped cranks so they get a little deeper.

dtermining line for cranks lay beneath two factors.depth, and cover.
line diameter does affect depth.lighter line will make it run deerer.whereas
heavier line will run deeper.the more diameter a line has,the more water resistance it gets from its larger diameter. kvd may have 3 combos rigged with same crankbait, rod and reel but different line to find the sweet spot.

as rebbasser mentioned, i also use green trilene.if i am fishing heavy cover, rocks,or anything that can damage the line,i will use xt,not xl because xt is more abrasion resistant.but if there is less cover,i will use smoother casting xl

Right now I use #10 iron silk. I get father casts with it, but still am not getting deep enough with some cranks. What about using sticky weights on the cranks themselves, would that make them run deeper?

Flouro doesnt have the knot strength that i'd like,so most of the time im running 10 or 12 lb XT. i need that abrasion resistence because im constantly trying to bang that bait on cover. i've heard it said you lose 85% of the CB's effectiveness if you're not bumping or ticking on stuff, and im a pretty firm believer in it. once and a while ill go 12 lb Sensation for a little bitter deeper depth with better control. once you get in a couple dozen casts the XT really starts working a lot easier in most reels.

a braid type line will get the bait deeper. a sticky weight like you mentioned will also help, check out suspend dots if you haven't already. as Rebasser already mentioned, he wants something with some stretch. I agree. However, if you dont get that stretch through the line, I suggest you use a rod that will allow some give. Reason being, a bass will often throw a crank because the line/lure combo puts too big of a hole in the bass's mouth. Use a more forgiving line and/or rod and the hole doesn't get as big, meaning more bass landed instead of more hooks thrown. good luck finding what works for you.

10 lb Stren Flourocarbon. Little stretch but a slow rod tip will compensate for the flouro's light stretch. Don't go above 10, your bait won't go as deep (1'-2'). Granted, if you don't fish water thats clear to slightly murky, then mono will be ok. Just make sure that you get line with good abrasion resistance.
