Default Non boater tackle packing..

listen up newbies.. room is a premium on a bass boat..

as i will be fishing the ycg team tourny's this year from a champion.-not mine- i will have to dig out the tackle bag and get my gear in order..since i have prefished -in a monsoon- i know the lake well enough that bait choice's is easy..

i am going to put all of this

into this

just like this

as it is still a bit cold water temps in the 40's i am takin an extra rod..normally i would only pack 6..not the jerk bait rod

any questions??

Yes a silly question. Why need to take a buoy if fish as non boater? And why need to bring that many rods.

I noticed you have right and left hand retrieve. What is your gain from this or are you just more comfortable using certain baits?

Okay, have one. I can understand the jig rod with a left hand reel, but why the jerkbait rod?

take it you don't flip/pitch much. to switch hands every pitch is time consuming. not to mention if you do something alot like crank or chunk the blade your arms get fatiqued. switching to the lefty reels for pitching saves your arms from being totally wore out..

What a lovely floor covering!

You still use more gear as a nonboater than I do in my own boat.

Do you keep the majority of your plastics in "plano" boxes? Out of packages? Or are you just taking those hanful of packages I see in the lower right of the first pic?

actally the loose packs on the right are extra spinnerbait trailers and jig skirts.

all of my plastic baits are in plano boxes the 2 smaller ones above the reels are the plastic bait boxes i am taking..one with the paca craws and one with shakey head worms and a pack of hula grubs..

Hey Zooker, this is intended to be a serious question for you and any others who fish toruneys...
Is this too much tackle to take to club toruneys?

There are 7 plano 3700's with five 1 gallon ziploc bags full of plastics?

Thanks

Ryan

Although I purchased a boat last year, I didn't use it in any tournaments since I was new to most of the water that my club was fishing (a lot of out-of-state locations). Anyway, I got comfortable keeping a ton of gear in the boat. When I had to get ready for tournaments, it was always very difficult to downsize. I found myself saying "what should I take and what should I leave"?
I left a bunch at home and the boaters that I was paired with still thought that I took too much.

I take 2 bags and 6 rods with me. One bag is small, it holds most of my soft plastic, but the other one is pretty big, A little bigger than the BPS 3700 bag. As long as you keep your stuff out of the boaters way, I don't think that they will have an issue (unless they are jerks) Seems like if your boater is complaining about you having too much gear, they just don't want you out fishing them... Just watch out for the guy who assends you away from the spots you want to hit. I hate those guys, especially in small club tourneys, where the $ you make is a few bucks, and not your primary source of income. I'll talk to a guy before I fish with him and try to get a feel for him. I tell him straight up that if he plans on assending me I'd rather find a new partner. So far, I havn't ran into too many jerks, but one can never tell what's gonna happen in the future.

I like to keep it simple. If I go as a non boater I take what I need base on season pattern, not a closest of rods and tackle. More often than not I take no more than 3 rods in boaters office to keep it less cluster and because I know what the bass want on given days.

Not trying to be a show off here, let me give you an instance, a few years ago I was invited as a non boater from local angler that fishes at one of his favorite lake that I was invited to. The lake is "new" water for me and I ended up 2nd out of 36 boats. I only brought 3 rods and the boater was throwing kitchen sink all day placed in 23rd. It all season pattern & water temp that I watch for.

i take a bag that holds 4 utility boxes
BAG:

box 1: crankbaits and lipless crankbaits
box2: terminal tackle(hooks, beads, weights, swivels, shakey heads, spot removers, etc.)
box 3: spinnerbaits and jigs
box 4: topwater

Then i take 3 more utility boxes:

box 5: 7.5" worms
box 6: senkos and crawfish
box 7: trick worms/ floating worms

THEN i take a small blue bag that holds 10 or 15 packs of assorted plastics.

also bring 5 rods...3 baitcasters and 2 spinning rods.

it sounds like a lot but it really isnt all that much stuff.

oh yea, i usually take a small cooler with some drinks and snacks. i always ask my boater if he has room for my stuff before i start throwin stuff in the boat though...most boaters are curtious enough to leave you more than enough room to be comfortable.

here what i would do with all your boxes ryan..

i would buy a falcon spinner bait box the same size as the 3700 boxes.. this one box will allow you to put all your blades and a hand full of buzz baits in one box..

i have fished for years with a buzzbait and have NEVER lost more than 2 in a day.. ya think about it you actually only use the buzzer for about 2 hours total in a day time tourny.. i only have 2 in my tourny bag a white and a chartuses..

plano boxes are cheap buy some more..

i have 100's of plano boxes .. i tend to pair down what baits i need. i cull my tackle boxes every 6 months on average.. if i have in the past caught fish on a certain bait i would have at least two. baits you pound and use alot. for me the bandit 100 or a dt6 i have 4 of each in the colors i use the most..

ok your goin to love this.. i switch out the jerk bait box with plastic critter bait box-bush hawgs,lizards-. you can toss couple poppers or spooks in one of your cranking boxes. this elimates the need for that one box..

see the popper in the second compartment down right side?
this box i am in and out of all the time.
.

now in my upper picture you see two smaller 3600 boxes. they are the plastic baits i use the most this time of year. pacas and trick/finesse worms.. later in the year i switch out the pacas and put a hula grub box in there..

your jig box is set up right with the trailers and all..

the one thing i don't see is extra spinner bait skirts or jig skirts or trailer grubs..

i use a smaller terminal tackle box that fits in the end of the tackle bag..

really i am just givin ya an opinion. i have seen guys who are obseenly organized and i have seen the open a pack of worms take one and dump the rest loose in a compartment..

as a tourny angler you want to be as efficent as possable.the more your lures are in the water means the more chance you have of catching fish..

you cull your cranking tackle down to what you "know" to work in a given lake. the less time you lose when changin to a differant color or bait. you don't have to second guess and you don't have to dig and take 5 mintues to untangle a wad of crankbaits..

been there done dat..

Zooker thanks for the advice...

I keep trailers for jigs and spinnerbaits, and all of my creature baits (lizards, craws, super hogs, baby brush hogs, chigger craws, and paca craws) in with the gallon ziplocs

Also, how many spinnerbaits does a falcon spinnerbait box hold, I have 60+ spinnerbaits in about every color and blade combination, alot are doubles in case I hang one up, and break it off.
Thanks Again

Ryan

*groans*dam your making me work by having to go look..

ok so i went and looked.. i have the falcon fto 700 it holds 30 spinner/buzz baits... like i said i wish i had gotten a large size -not sure if they make a bigger one- it is roughly the size of a 3600 plano box..

of course you know that mixing chartuses and white skirts is a no/no so.. i use one side for chartuses the other for white.. i do have some mix breed skirts -blue/white,black/white,chartuses/white...

so here would be a tear down for ya.. i haul about 8 chartuse blades 1/2 double colorado blades half single colorado blade. if i am throwing a chartuse blade it is going to be muddy..all blades are gold..

in white i go 4 double willow, 4 double colorado, and 6 of my double colo/willow mix..

of the 4 each
i have 2 all silver double willow, 2 silver over gold. same way with the double colorado..

as i pointed out afore 2 buzzbaits are in the mix..
