Default Went fishing today....

...surprise surprise.

I'm telling you anglers, I GOT THE SICKNESS!!
I no sooner get off the water and before I even get home I'm deciding where I'll go the next day or what I'll do different or try to improve on my next outting....which is almost always the next day.
It is so lucky I get iced out in the winter or I'd be in rough shape. I had a contest with a friend back when I was just 14. Contest, who could fish the most days in a years time. Spearing and bow hunting carp counted.
He lived like 5 blocks from a spillway and I was a city boy. That kid fished 398 straight days, made the paper and stuff.
That year I fished 102 days. I had to ride my bike across the Miss. Bridge like 6 miles from my house. I had two paper routes (one for me and one for the monkey. Ya we met at a young age). The morning route was down town business' route so I had a travel rod setup that I carried in a back pack and after the route which was right by the river, I'd go fish. Back than I was a crappie hunter. I used artificials for them though. Boy did I loose a lot of 1/32 oz. jigs. Had every color of jig, tube, grub made and carried most with every time I fished. I soon rigged a back pack so I could carry 3 travel ultra lites and one light. Insanity started young.
Oh and I was a Catch and Release crappie hunter too.
I'd climb out on lay downs so I could get away from snags and stuff. I've lived my life around fishing ever since.
I'm telling you I'm a SICK,SICK man!

Anyway our last true warm weather was yesterday and today.
So naturally I fished from 7 (sun up) till like 2.
Oh and I kayaked both days.
So both days as always I start casting like right at launch.
The bite is ON!!!
Crazy action. Like a dozen plus ALL on a single texas rigged Space Monkey today. With in like 40 minutes of launch. Can't ever remember catching so many on one plastic anything in my life. Most were 14 inches or better.
Some a lot better.

This was BOTH DAYS!
The plan was to flip laydowns but this bay is close to launch and was across from the starting laydowns.

Now I knew the wind was going to be like 15mph today so I worked the pond acordingly.
Kayaking and wind don't really get along to well.

So pitching and flipping NuJigs. Rage chunk trailer.
I got to tell you something. If you fish lay downs. If you flip and pitch wood and the shoreline. Do yourself a favor GET SOME NUJIGS!!!
They flat out will not hang up!!!!!
Now the hooking the roof of the mouth and all the other great features are great but I started with Alphas specificaly for snag resistance. Never will regret it. THANK YOU BO AND CHANE AND KEVIN (PRO REEL WHO FIRST INTODUCED ME TO CHANE AND ALPHAS!!)!

So I did an 'Upgrade Thread'

I should of added this one!

This fish came flipping a laydowns
It took the NuJig and dove hard and straight back into the tree.
Now anyone who kayaks or small craft fishes KNOWS how ANY fish will pull the craft....and a big one....look out!
Pulls me into shore and I watched it swim around a LARGE branch and WRAP itself around it.
Like it knew EXACTLY what it was doing.!

Now this is why I research everything I can on fishing.
I read how to get I big fish out when it wraps itself around a branch.

So I THOUGHT IT WAS A GONER THOUGH! It was big. I'm having ABSOLUTLY NO boat control WHATS SO EVER.

Here's what happens.
You have to keep the line tight so you keep tension on the bass. You can feel it tugging. A MUST or you risk a spit out!
You pull the bass up to the branch and then let it pull itself back down. ALWAYS WITH THE LINE TIGHT like I mentioned.
You continue this untill the bass wears itself out and then you can pull it and it will come around the branch like dead weight and un wrap itself.

AND IT WORKED!!!
I bet from bite (remember, I was flipping so it wasn't like I had a lot of line out) it was 20 minutes!
Anyway it doesn't move me up further but it's an up grade none the less.
I'll put it in it's proper place tommorrow.

Thanks for letting me share and I hope you enjoyed!

Well done Joe! Those are the kind of days that can put everything in perspective. Way to go on starting to begin to get the hang on using the camera too. Regarding the steady pressure/tire them technique, I've found that disengaging the spool works just about as well for me especially since I tend to use light line a lot. 10 lb test (or less) just can't stand the strain of sawing back and forth across a limb for very long, but complete slack line and rushing right up to the limb has been good to me. IMO it's about a 30/70 crapshoot either way.

Kind of looks like your putting that yak to good use.
I normally use braid (30lb)for flipping just hold tension it normally swims out

Bob, Joe, Ken, Mule, thanks.

Bob,
you know me, can't just share pics..........

Joe,
in the last wieght photo you can see how clear the water is (easy 6-10 ft. sight, maybe 3-4 with dark lures).
Spring fed gravel pit. HEAVILY FISHED! they don't have this forum to walk them through or share the best ideas with though
Only like max depth 30-40 ft but often 10ft with in 6 yards from bank. Good amount of semi shallow similar to where I started. But if a tree falls often it stays full and the whole thing gets submerged. To really appreciate it a SI unit is neat. (Thank you Bruce!)
That's why I could see the crazy thing wrap itself.

Ken,
I use to be 8lb across the board except my ultras and lights. I now use 10, 12, 14. Braid I usually toss 30lb/8lb.mono eq. across the board. Bottom line...this time of year it's sometimes a quess to remember which rod has which weight line anyway
I hate that DAM camera/picture taking stuff still.
Catch a fish, go to hatch, pull tackle bag out with scale and camera, get back to seat, get camera out and turned on, re wiegh fish for photo, take numerous shots because I'm a camera putz,....and half the time I hit the on/off button instead of the flash button....then it all goes back.

Now here's the best,
Photo 4, you see the 4in slide on the left by hatch?
That's there for a camera mount I have.
Have another back in the rear of the kayak that I got a pole mount to see over the angler.
I then realized the fricking camera still had to be dinked with to set timer and then back in chair before pic. I only know how to set timer for one pic.
SO THAT WAS A WASTED IDEA!
Back holds my flag and rear light too, so thats not worthless.
Got a rod holder I'm attaching a slide mount to for maybe the front.
Got 12in slides on both side boards (black in pics) too.
The technique, I use to hate piching trees due to snags. Now thanks to Bo and Chane I'M FEARLESS!! , so this was one of the firsts I could manuver craft and get a chance. It's probably not even a good method but some Pro said it and the most amazing part is, I remembered it!

Mule,
why I continue to confirm what a PUTZ I am I'll never know?
I actually have a Shimano Caistac (sp) with a flipping switch on a Croix Legend loaded with 30lb. braid. Actually took it out of car night before and never put it back in. ya going pitching and leave the pitching rod at home (only Joe)

Wacky Rigged senkos would be worth a try too....that setup was safely sitting next to the pitching rod.
But,
I DID HAVE TWO RODS SETUP WITH CRANKS THOUGH, THAT NEVER SO MUCH AS GOT TOUCHED, ALONG.

Anglers,
thanks again!

I wish we had small bodies of water like that around here. We have tons of smallish ponds and I've put my yak in several of them but they are mostly all featureless. Through the miracle of SI I've learned that many of my small waters are 8' max depth and devoid of much cover, structure or depth changes. They're ok for bank fishing but I much prefer the large (20,000 acre+) lakes for putting the yak in.

Unfortunately, the yellow jackets took over my hummingbird feeders. At the high point I probably had about 50 hummers when the migration started. Before the bulk of the birds came in I had to take the feeders down because it became dangerous to even go outside due to the yellow jacket swarms surrounding the feeders. I love my little birdies but not willing to take the chance on one of my loved ones being swarmed by those nasty little stingers.

You know I mentioned I use NuJigs and why I use them.
Thought I'd share this with you anglers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bq6wOKA5IvY#t=74

You know that if the brush on shore is that thick, it's probably thick into the water for a ways too!

This is what happens in the water too.
I hated pitching because I'm the guy who hits the shore as much as the water.
How many think your jig you currently fish would be lost?
Can't tell you how many I lost 'before' doing just this exact thing!!
You have on 12lb or better line.... line cut time.
I'M NOT REALLY PUSHING THESE THINGS but thought you anglers should see WHY I use them.

You folks know that almost anything I'm told I research and test.
Had a fish crib that the local gov. put in a pond this spring. They put them on the ICE last year with NO weight in center. Just stuffed with branches.
So they didn't sink at first and one got blown in towards shore.
I won THREE different $5 bets that I could toss in the middle of crib with great hieght on toss and still get it back to the shore/bank.
Can't tell you how many times I've hit that dang over hanging branch I'm trying to pitch under.

I now will pitch into anything and everything with out a single hesitation.
This product has made me the jig fisherman I always wanted to be!
