usally hook shinners under the top fin right

sometimes i hook em through both their lips.

keeps em alive longer

hook through the lips if you are trolling, behind the dorsal fin if you want it swimming near the top, and behind the anal fin if you want it swimming downward. Sometimes they'll swim at the VERY Top of the water if hooked behind anal fin. Just be careful realing the bait in if not hooked in lips.

when i fish shiners, i put a BB shot about 6-12 inches above the hook and hook the shiner through both lips. when the minnow gets on bottom, the weight from the shot will make it struggle. it drives smallies wild, and buckets too

i hook lizards either through the lips, or the skin on the back right in front of the hind legs.
