No matter where you are in the country it seems like grass is often times a major factor in locating and catching bass. Most of my bass fishing life has been spent around grass. And I know the lakes up here are full of them in the summer. From just looking at satellite pictures of the lakes, it looks like you could walk across the mats of milfoil (apparently it's an invasive grass here) and hydrilla that develops when the water really starts to warm.

So I thought it might be interesting to see what you guys like to throw through out the year in grassy lakes.

In Florida I always had luck ripping a burning a spinnerbait over the tops of the grass just barley ticking them, if I hit a long stock I'd rip it out the strike would usually occur then.

When the water started warming and fish started getting more lethargic, I'd toss a senko around the still submerged grass, and on the grass line and let it settle in the grass, and just lift it out.

If that didn't produce a light un-pegged 6" or 7" taxes rigged worm, or lizard on a 3/16 oz or less weight and straight shank worm hook produced allot of good fish included a PB. I'd drag it along untill it hit a tough stalk and I'd rip it free. Buzz frogs also produced there fair share of fish.

When water temps started dropping again, and the grass started to die back down, a shaky head trick worm rigged on a light 1/8 oz ball head fished around grass edges picked off the last fish of the year.

Other things took some fish, like frogs, jigs, and topwaters, but those were main ones...

More than time of year, my techniques change depending on the type of grass and how thick it is.

When you are talking the thick matted grasses, I am going to a frog. In my opinion, this is what they were designed for. If the grass is just beneath the water surface, I may switch over to a buzz bait.
In past years, I would fish it just like you describe. I would work the edges with a senko or an ika. Last year I started punching into the grass. I figure everyone is hitting the edges, and very few are hitting the middle.
For me, that usually means 25lbs fluoro with a 1/2 or 1 oz weight. I prefer a craw or creature style bait that does not have too many arms. In my opinion, these can punch through the top level and then find the holes in the grass easier.
If I am not getting hit on the fall or within a few hops, I will recast.
One of the other things I like to do is punch through it with a heavy straight briad drop shot. I do get hung up a lot, but I find that this can often trigger a strike that other baits won't.
If the grass is found in bunches with lots of openings, I will usually go to the spinnerbait. I like to cast far past the grass and then rip it through.

After ice out into early spring while it's just starting to grow I'll work a lipless crank across and through it, as well as a a spinnerbait and jig. After it has some size to it I'll be working a spinnerbait through it most of the time and a pegged beaver or jig in the open pockets. I'll also work a shallow crank if the tops of the grass are a few feet below the surface. Once the grass nears the surface, say within a couple inches to a foot or so, I'll be relying on topwater a lot, as well as a swim jig and spinnerbait. I'll also try working a lizard through it, as well as my pegged beaver or jig in the pockets. And like cass mentioned, once it forms mats on the surface, thats froggin time, as well as the pegged beavers. You kinda get the idea I like beavers? haha I'll still be using a spinnerbait around heavy grass where open areas allow.
