Catfish on tiki stick
Today, I went to a local lake (Lake Isabella) which is known for catfish. I saw a couple of bass under a small overhanging tree, so I tossed a watermelon red flake tiki stick out past the overhang. As a worked the tiki stick toward the overhang, I got a bite. At first, I thought it was the biggest bass I'd ever hooked, but once it started fighting, I realized it wasn't a bass. There was no mistaking the characteristic tugging of a catfish. The catfish literally almost pulled all 170lbs of me into the water. He would have succeeded had it not been for the line breaking.
I've been contemplating buying some Power Pro. If I had had Power Pro, I might have landed it. That's not the first time I've hooked a catfish fishing for bass, but it was definitely the biggest catfish I've ever hooked. I believe Zooker posted not too long ago about hooking into a whale as well. As for Power Pro, I've read some of your posts saying it frays at times. I'm thinking about using Power Pro on my $20 Dick's Sporting Goods 7ft heavy rod. It is one of their house brands. Are cheap rod guides responsible for the fraying? I don't want to waste all the cash on Power Pro if I'm just going to ruin it with bad rod guides. |

Caught a 20 lb flathead on a jig-n-pig a couple years back-wouldn't have boated it if I wasn't using PowerPro. 50 lb on a baitcaster-same diameter as 12 lb mono.

why does this not suprise me.. simple cat fish roam the shallow bedding areas late in the spawn looking for a single bass protecting either bunched fry or eggs. seeing most are protecting fry right here now. i would bet that was it. a cat fish has little luck getting near bedding fish as several will gang up and head butt the cat fish -even massive cat fish- chasing them away from the beds. but a single bass stands a snow balls chance in hell of chaseing off a big cat fish.. one gulp and bye bye fry..

The Powerpro frays usually closer to the hook. It's usually do to a lot of wear and tear. Another plus is you can actually see it when it needs to be retied. Get the same size diameter of line in Powerpro that you use now(you are already used to the size line, and the strength will probably more than double, at least any mono), and it won't break(but you might get wet next time, unless you lose the rod LOL.

Only cat I've ever caught while bass fishing was a bullhead on a worm. FLorida isn't that great of a state to be in if you want to catch big catfish, you'll get a lot more mudfish and gar.

Go with power pro then tie an ande mono leader, gets rid of fraying. Thats what we doooo down here in the salt inshore and offshore!! And the fish don't see the line as much. Better yet use flurocarbon leader!

pnj,
whats the biggest gripe ya have with powerpro? mine is that it grabs onto the spool every now and then when I am casting, plus I had it loop into a knot one cast, other than that i like it for the strength and sensitivity |
