Default Pond fishing

I've posted this small pond picture before...You can compare the size of the pond to a baseball field. (Lower left corner)

I was watching a Bill Dance show on farm ponds today and it got me to ask more questions.

Water clarity - I don't know yet.

Depth - about 15' at the pier (Gets deep quickly)

Known Forage - Bluegill - you can spit from the pier and bluegill will come up and eat it.

Public/Private - Public Park Pond

-I never see casters on the pond, only bobber fisherman
-I have SEEN these caught - Bullhead, Bluegill.
-Trout are stocked there every year.
-I don't know if there are bass there.
-There is a sign next to the pond that mentions walleye, bass, carp, northern, bullhead, bluegill. Those are all fish that don't seem like they would be in a small pond like that. That's why I don't know if there are bass there.
-I don't know how old the pond is.

What would you throw out there, and what would you focus on?

Thanks,

Julien

Will you be in a boat or on the bank? If in a boat, will you have a depthfinder?

Throwing something like a jig or carolina rig can tell you a lot about the bottom.

Heavily fished public ponds can be a challenge with artificials. If it is legal, I'd catch some of the small bluegills, and toss them out on a larger rod. Try freelineing them first, if no hits in 30 mins, add a heavy split shot in front of the hook, and let it reach the bottom, perhaps even casting it out - let it sink, then slowly work it back in. If you get a taker, remember to let it run a while before setting the hook!

once the water temp gets above 50, throw a rattletrap...just about all species will hit a rattletrap, and its a good way to see if bass are in there.
Try 1/4 ounce ratLtrap in bluegill, or crome or red

all those fish are capable of living in there. Try swimbaits or jigs, and rattle traps. Those should tell you if there is any bass in there.

Joolz, that looks like a great place to learn and to try new baits/techniques. Just go start fishing it-no telling what might be in there. Biggest bass I've caught came out of a tank about the same size:

Joolz,

I would start with some search baits. I'd try cranks, swimbaits, and swimming a jig. If none of those work go with a good ol' texas rigged worm and work it slowly back to you. It there are bass in there you'll catch one sooner than later.

It also looks like there are some bushes or fallen trees in that pond. If you look really close you can see the outline of something. If they really are trees in there I would toss texas rigged soft plastics in them. If there's bass in there they will be around those trees.

Thanks a lot guys. I'll try all of those techniques. Here is another pond about 200 yards away from my house.
I've never seen people fishing it. It is EXTREMELY small. I use it to learn new techniques. I think it might freeze in the winter it's so small. Do you think there could be bass in there? It's been around for a good 6 years. Probably even longer.

I won't be fishing at either pond with a boat. I can almost cast across them.

I forgot to mention...
If you look to the right of the pond in the first picture, you'll see that the pond connects to a little creek type thing with fast moving water only about 5 feet in width. It is about 200 yards in length also. What could that be?

I'll probably take pictures once it gets warmer outside.

I don't know why but it bugs me to watch Bill Dance fish. The way he leans back on the bow chair and hardly ever gets off it. He also rarely tells you where he is fishing because as is quoted he fishes farm ponds on a regular basis.

Joolz, as was posted earlier if that pond gets a bunch of pressure it will be difficult to catch bass but can be done. I would try a jig or tube and bounce it off the bottom once the water temps warm a bit.

Thanks HOG. I'm making a list of stuff to try once it warms up.
