Default Help with Hooks

Hey everyone, this has been my best season in my small lake, and I always catch and release. Today, i hooked a big 19 1/2 inch fish. But later, I hooked more three fish, and all three started bleeding. One even had the hook behind his toungue, and he was floating, not on his side, but I think he died. I am using a regular crankbait with two treble hooks. How do I stop this from happening?

Barbless hooks. You will lose a few more fish, especially on cranks, but releasing will be much easier and it makes a difference in survival rate.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what else can be done. Its a bit in the nature of fishing, you are stabing fish with a sharp metal object, sometimes they bleed.

You can try and play fish more quickly overall to reduce the stress they encounter, and exercise good handling habits when you have them out of the water (minimize contact to not injure the slime coat, keep in water as long as possible, don't lip and hold the fish at a horizontal angle). That wont stop the bleeding though. Heck, we once had a thread on here about the few times most anglers have actually hooked a fish through the top of their head, instantly killing the fish. It just happens.

WTL's ideas are all good, but just wanted to add be sure to wet your hands before handling the fish at all. Helps to protect the fish's slime coat. This is one consideration that is often overlooked, even by a large number of pros.

Good Fishing, Mac2

Sometimes it just happens. I remember the thread WTL mentions. In my experience it tends to happen more with single hook baits like a Fluke or a Senko, but there really isn't much you can do if you get a deeply hooked fish.

thanks guy. When fishing today, I had no bleeding at all, and no dead fish I guess it was just bad luck that day.

Default bleeding fish

Hi Nick, I keep a bottle of Mountain Dew in my boat just for this, if you have a bleeder just pour some Mnt Dew on the wound and the bleeding should stop. bigbasser

I forgot to say it doesn't matter if the Mnt Dew goes flat. bigbasser

Default not setting the hook

if your fish blead or are hooked deep it is probally because if you dont set the hook or dont set the hook at the right time they usally get hooked deeper in the throat so if you feel a tug on the crank bait i usally give it at least a little tug because with crank baits it usally sets the hook forr you
