Default Phenix M1

This was a fun build for a Hook1 pro staffer and personal friend.Phenix M1 spiraled wrapped with Fuji SiC micros for heavy bass jigs / T-rigs...7'8'' 1/4-2oz.

Ill have more thoughts on the M1 blank later...So far its hitting everything he wanted this rod to be...I plan on fishing it this weekend as we have a tournament on Fork...Im gonna give him the rod ,then take it back..for uh, testing

Dang Walker, that rod is absolutely SICK!

Great work as always, and I love the bright green highlights.

And I'm looking forward to getting your opinion of that M1 blank.

First, very nice looking rod, love the green/black/white grip. Curious about the spiral wrap with micro guides - how many guides do you need to avoid line contact with the blank? Is line contact more of an issue with the micro's spiral wrapped vs. regular guides? I'd love to see a photo taken looking down the blank to get a better idea of the spiral set up.

That's an awesome build! It's nice to see someone go for the spiral wrap with micros, it's so far out of the norm for a lot of people. I love the texture on the blank too. I'm sure he's going to love it!

Fantastic looking rod walker! Love the look of the blanks, truly beautiful!

Any idea what reel he's throwing on there?

Thanks Bruce!
This was static tested with the heaviest weight being about 1.3lbs deflecting the rod..No line touch at all...This is a 7'8'' blank and Im running 9 guides on it...With spiral wrapping the only area that concerns blank rub is in the transition guides that make the 180 to the bottom...
And with guides on the bottom you can drop a guide or two and save a few grains of weight...

I can take a photo of the rod loaded and post it when the finish is cured enough...

Anthony so far I really like the M1....This one is rated up to 2oz and feeling it I would first guess its under that....I was test casting it with 1.25oz and it loaded and casted wonderfully!....Rated xfast, I found it to have a nice softer action for a light blank with its ratings...Its definitely thinner walled than I expected...But its seems to a be strong blank so far.
So Im really looking forward to fishing it myself!

Awesome work like always.

What's the green and white in the cork? Just accents? Any specific purpose? They look cool.

Thanks! ...This is all EVA foam...With Lime green craft foam acccents....The look is purely cosmetic cause the guy really liked my original circle inlay grip.

I told him if he got angry to squeeze the grip and they pop out like a stress relieving doll and makes a kazoo noise

I didnt get RDA measurements on it like I wanted ...But Im very impressed with this model...Very light and thinned walled for its power which should be expected when throwing around nano tech....The total build weight was 4.4oz out the door if I remember correctly..

I also didnt try to max out the 2oz rating on it but the backbone feels solid..Casting a 3/4oz Trig was cake and it could easily load more...Again, its rated x-fast which flexes about true, but has a subtle softness that I personally prefer......The finish on it really is something else which only M1 features...and extremely durable unlike my first thoughts when I felt it.

Im anxious to build me one on them......I honestly didnt get the time on it I wanted too...Life is busy, but the client loves it and I look to using it again the next time we fish.

Bruce, With the tourney prep and time, I didnt get the loaded photo like I promised...But heres a quickie of the spiral guides on this rod.

I am going by Lance's when I get off the rig. I might be in trouble if the blank feels as good as it looks. I am hopefully just going to walk out some guides, but I always seem to end up with more.

That's an interesting concept - spiral wrapped - but I've never tried one. One other related question, then I'll leave you alone (I don't want to evolve into Joedog ). Does spiral wrapping make a rod "right handed or left handed" depending upon the direction of the wrap (clockwise vs. counterclockwise?), I believe I may have heard or read that somewhere. AND if it does, how would that effect a backhand cast - if at all? The monkey is poking me Walker, but on a fixed income I don't know if I can afford you anymore.

Not to steal PC thunda or to jump in, but I am. My buzz bait rod is spiral wrapped and I cast back handed, rolling, pitching and conventional. Some will argue to turn on the handle side, some opposite. If you turn to the handle side, you eliminate 2 or 3 lonely guides sticking up in the air for snagging while it is laying on the deck. I am not a pro, but I have built them on both sides and the outcome of a difference was not noted or seen. I use em for tip up applications.

I get it now, the wrap direction "should be" (or preferrably be) dictated by the reel handle, ie a right handed or left handed wrap, not by the casting hand. Makes sense to keep those first guides off the carpet. That the spiral direction does not effect the casting capibilities is a welcome enlightenment for me. As for "jumping in", I appreciate that you did, THANKS Bubba!!

Ive haven't had any problems with back hand casts or any other casting...I sprial to the side of the handle because of what Bubba wrote...If I lay a rod down, its handle up.
I dont notice any gains or losses...Only the gain when a fish makes a run on me..Thats when the control is much easier when the upper rod section is not twisting (even better in a yak when its a close strike..The argument of better sensitivity , casting distance , yadda, yadda...Maybe to some, but not necessarily me...Im in for the control.

Bubba I think your gonna like the M1...I usually do not like glossy blanks...But the pattern and finish is really sexy.....When I first got it in, I had a few doubt/concerns...But during the build they were vanishing quickly.

I sort of had a dirty taste in my mouth with the scoliosis issue on the first run of the K2s. But they seem to have corrected that so maybe another chance is due time.

Awwwwwwwwww man why didja have to go and say that for? Now I'm gonna be wanting 3 or 4 spiral wrapped casting rods for my kayak. Man, a matched set of Nelson kayak sticks - what a great idea, that could be a whole new speciality line for you WJ and I would be happy join your "PRO STAFF" and test a few prototypes.
