Default When you fish alone

It is easy to let cold or wind influence your choice whether to fish or not.

Thats true Fred. But if I want to go, it's got to look pretty bad to keep me off the water. The older I get the harder it is for me to stand the cold, and fishing from a small jonboat makes wind a real issue as well.

Now, I have made many jokes about it, but I do accept that my cold is quite different to most other regions.
That being said, neither cold nor wind have really ever influenced whether or not I will go out. I have had the wind change my mind on how long to stay out. Once I get to a point where my 17' aluminum is being pushed too much I have been known to call it quits early.
Rain however is a different animal for me. If it is raining and not a tournament day then I get back under the covers and say forget it.

Sounds about the same as me. With my teeny little boat, wind can really shorten the day for me.
I can put up with a little rain but just say no to a hard rain

Fishing alone? I don't bother if it's rainy, cold or windy. On the other hand if I'm on a fishing trip somewhere - I fish in anything except a THUNDERSTORM.

I used to fish for walleye and trout in the cold pretty often. As long as my fingers aren't freezing I'll fish. Ben out as early as Feb and as late as Dec. as long as the water isn't hard. Just like Bassboogieman as long as there's no lightning or a very strong wind.

I usually leave my boat at home and grab my waders if I'm fishing alone.

Last October, I had a great day fishing alone at a small pond. It was about 45 degrees with a light rain. The great thing was that because of the weather, I had the lake to myself. I caught 7 bass, the biggest one was 19 inches and I got 3 that were 15 to 17 inches. I lost 3 others. I fished about 5 hours then it started to get colder and the wind picked up. I called it a day and went home happy.

Cold normally won't prevent me from going out but like Cass, I live in a relatively warm part of the country. Wind will definitely keep me in though. Whether it's cold or not, fishing in high wind isn't much fun.

I don't let anything stop me except for strong winds and rain. The 10" jon doesn't like wind.

I got an hour or so in from shore yesterday before the rain storm hit. It was windy but 65 degrees. Today it was at least 20 degrees colder as a high and much higher winds. I had only one bump on a shaky head but nobody was there when I tried to set the hook. There were two guys out there who were catching some crappie though.

As long as I can still feel my fingers I will fish by myself others tend to tap out a little sooner

Ice isn't thick enough up here yet. The rain we had pretty much ruined it for a while. Ice that's gotten rained on is much weaker, so we probably won't be able to get out on 4" Oh darn... I guess I'll just have to stay warm inside and look at TackleWarehouse!

I'll stay home due to weather more when I fish myself. I often fish with one or more of my four sons and then it's harder to go back to bed. They would sure let me hear it. The weather I get the most nervous with is thunderstorms. I don't like lightning. I'm from way up north so coldweather really doesn't bother me much. I must admit it does get to me more every year though.

Couple of factors in my decision. First, I fish from a 12 foot aluminum boat since I generally pond fish. My means of propulsion by choice is a paddle. Second. my doctor put me on blood pressure medication about 5 years ago, I find it harder to stay warm. When I am cold I am not enjoying myself. I am also real prone to professional overrides in really windy weather.

We are probably all aware (in the back of our minds at least) that there are certain dangers associated with fishing alone. But, life ain't much fun without taking a few risks, right? In cold weather especially, there is always the remote possibility of falling or getting wet and subsequently having a dose of hypothermia.

Like many of you have mentioned, most of my cool weather fishing is from a small boat or from the bank. What I normally do is carry one of those small two-way radios, and have my wife or someone else keep the other one. That way if I do something dumb and get in trouble, at least I can call for help.

if it is cold+windy+humid here (like it has been past few weeks, down in the 30s and 40s), then no I will not go. Now if it is just cold with no wind then I will still go.
