Yellow Magic Fans
Is this this true?
Are you swapping hooks on a $18-$20 lure? If so, what are you using? As mentioned, especially the rear feathered hook? Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 Great Bait, Terrible Hooks, September 30, 2011 By P0932 (read all my reviews) Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design, Performs well, Quality, durable finish Disadvantages: terrible hooks "I absolutely love Yellow Magic baits. They are the best popper that I have ever used. Spits exactly like a popper should. They do have one issue however. They use absolutely the cheapest hooks on the market. Be prepared to change the hooks. If you don't you will eventually lose a fish because the hooks break just like I did on the first fish. Fortunately I had replacements. It would be extremely nice to get Premium hooks on a Premium bait. Not only that, it is difficult to find rear hooks that have feathers as nice as the original."

Yes it's very true. Yellow Magics come with about the crappiest stock hooks I've ever seen. I usually use Owner ST 36's on the front and back. I've been buying the dressed Owners to go on the back but I bought a vise and some hackle last week and have begun tying my own. I like round bend trebles on popping baits so I will probably continue to use the Owners.

I have had pretty much the same experience with Yellow Magics. They are a great bait with horrible hooks. Like Jrob, I also like roundbend hooks on topwater baits. Find you a good quality hook like the Owners that Jrob is talking about and your set. Gamakatsu and Mustad also make a good roundbend treble hook as well so you have some choices.

I get almost scared to change hooks on a bait like this. I have one I have caught a ton of fish on and now know the hooks suck but I don't want to change anything with the fear it would change how the bait works. Most of the time I am using this YM around open banks and docks so I just don't rush anything.

I don't have any yellow magic, but that is about the dumbest thing I've ever heard of - putting economy hooks on a premium bait. Who does their marketing? They must be maximizing profit on a decent lure buy putting crappy hooks on them. Glad I saw this, I won't bother trying one. I have little respect for manufacturers that scrimp on one part of a lure and still want to charge premium prices. Easisest solution if they really want to maximize profits yet still be up front would be to sell the WITHOUT hooks. Why charge you for crap hook? Drop the price a buck, sell more lures and the buyer can hang whatever his favorite hook may be on the lure. Really, thinking about it, that's not a bad idea. I change hooks on many lures before I fish them. The hooks that I remove are tossed in the trash = a total waste of money and hooks.
