Default water temp

this may seem as a no-brainer. When I read fishing articles relating to bass and water temp. are the articles referring to the water temp at surface or where the fish are?

I think most refer to the surface, but your question is a good one.....it's commonly held that some bass will hold at the thermocline, this being where the water undergoes a quick change in temp in a short space of a foot or two on the way down.....once deeper than the thermocline the oxygen level often drops off and bass are more comfortable at or above that level. In our lake mid summer, the thermocline seems to hang around 12 feet below the surface.....

It's not a hard and fast rule, as they may be feeding or on the move in shallower waters as well. Some fish finders can be adjusted to bounce a signal off the thermocline, a handy tool for sure....

Good question.....Good Fishing, Mac

I can't add any helpful knowledge regarding water temps but I would like to say Hello and welcome to the forums!

I agree that they are generally talking about surface water temperature. For the most part people go by the temperature displayed by their electronics which might be 2 feet below the surface.
