Default X-Rap

My son found a neat looking lure the other day. We "fished" it out, and it was one I had never seen. The only clue I had was that it was a Rapala and after checking out their website I determined that it was a 1/4 oz Glass Ghost X-Rap. It looks brand new, not a mark on it. I read up on it and it sounds okay, but I want your expert opinions...

My question is how to fish this lure and whether or not it is any good? Either way, for me, the price was right for a perfectly good lure in a color I don't have many of (white colored).

My son finds lures everytime we go anywhere even remotely related to fishing. He found me a Hula Popper once and also a slightly bent spinnerbait that is now fixed up as good as new. He has "lure radar" I think.

The X-Rap is a very good lure. You use it like a jerkbait, but it has a lot more action than say a typical Smithwick Rogue, or Original Rapala. You can catch fish on it year round IMO. However the speed of the retrieve is always the key for them.

I'm a fan of them too, I have caught some nice fish, but like JB have not caught anything big with it. I use the "jerk jerk pause" cadence with it. However it can be sucessful when used as a crank bait too. I have even caught bass with it while trolling from one spot to another.

What kind of X-Rap did you find...? I was wondering just because I want to try a model out.

best jerk bait made imo.. i use the glass ghost in clear water actually moves very simalar to a fluke..

i have a smogasboard of x-raps as not only are they deadly in fresh water but the right color is a salt water speck trout killer.

x-rap jerk baits have 2 sizes 8-10
the x-jerk -see spook top water sized bait
and the x-minnow the newest addition to the line..

i like them all

One thing x-rap guru forget to mention, is there are both salt and fresh water models. The salt models don't have a feather on the rear hook He of course prefers the salt model LOL. I've been on here way to long

Is it warm where you live flamez? If it's cold, I'd like to know how you used the x-rap. I'm going with (it's cold over here) the cast and let it sit there and twitch my rod method.

The Glass Ghost I have owned two of them..

Almost two years ago I was at the Grandparents. Sitting outside on Gun Lake (MI) an fishing while my wife was inside.

I was just casting and retrieving for probably two hours. Its a lake channel and I was outside mainly to enjoy the day not to fish for anything other than the sun! I wasnt even paying attention to the retreive for a good portion of that time.

I had the thing almost in to the dock and one of the biggest Musky I have ever seen in my life (personally, and alive not mounted) came to the surface to literally gulp my lure.

I cannot type here, what kind of reaction I had as I stood up and set the hook the fastest I have ever in my life. It immediately charged me and went under the dock. I had him on long enough to get another glimpse as he came out from under the dock and went under the boat.

My line was no match for the propeller on the boat and I lost that lure and fish. Only gain was the typical "fish story".

Needless to say I switched line to PowerPro and bought another glass ghost the next day.

I have yet to have much opportunity to fish that lure (been spending my limited summer time fishing Plastics) but I will always carry one with me from now on.

snake, I know how you feel. There have been times that I lost some really big pickerel while fishing for bass. If only I had put on a wire leader.

But with the wire you never get those type of bites It's always when you aren't expecting or prepared when those happen.

a jerkbait is usually most effective when the water has some clearity to it, its a site bait, however with the rattles in the chamber of the body, fish can hone in on the sound, then strike when they see the eratic behavior of the jerkbait, then usually hit it on the pause.
So "scrambled water" or muddy water would be least effective for a lure of this nature. You would need a flashy spinnerbait for muddy or dark plastic like a jig/pig

Yeah, I noticed that I used my x-rap on a sunny day with clear water in my pond, and caught a 4 pound bass. Today, I used a Shad Rap, and caught a 5 pounder near shore, and since it was raining the whole day, the water was completely brown.

my favorite scenerio for jerkbaits is cloudy and windy, with a front comming in. and the darker the better for cloudiness.

x-raps like all jerk baits work best in clear water.. some will work in stained water..

in salt water blue specks, clown, hot head, and gold.. will slay sea trout when trolled at 7-12 mph..

The only time i get big pike hits, is when I'm not fishing with a leader- Even better I can fish all day with a leader and get no big hits... my 8 year old will be panfishing with a worm and small hook and break off his line trying to land something way out of that league That's fishin'
