how do i stop lighter crank baits from spinning through the air?
the heavier one's -poes and traps -fly straight but a #5 shad rap goes like a badly thrown foot ball through the air. i am having diffculty getting these light baits to the area i want. i throw them hard enough to go 200 feet but am only getting 100-125 feet. because of this spinning.

the only advice i can give about c/baits would be bad advice i very seldom use them

I wish I knew. The long and light cranks are difficult to get to fly straight. I hope someone posts the answer. ???

7foot fenwick rod, a ambassador torno reel, 8 pound mono-cajun red.

I don't know that there is much you can do about it. The problem is, light weight, and a pretty large (releativley speaking of course) sail area for the air to grab.

The bigger baits, have more weight releative to their size, and like a Civil War minnie ball that weight is concentrated at one end, which keeps it pointing in one direction when it's in the air.

I started throwing those baits-Shad Raps-on a spinning rod. Get better distance since they are so light. No suggestion on the spinning bait, though.

The only thing you can do, and it doesn't always work, is to give it about 1.5 ft of line and make an arc so it gets going right before you let it go. Dont throw so hard either. This works most of the time and with some smaller baits.

I suspose using slightly lighter line (if you think you could get aways with it) might make it just marginally easier to cast. But in the end, there is no getting around the laws of physics, light crankbaits are just tough to cast.

me use stren .what ya touched in the head bassman? a shad rap was only an example allmost all of my cranks go funny. regaurdless who makes them.

cullin ever see david fritts cast ? 1.5 feet ?? more like 5 feet.i cast in the same style.

A suggestion for ya is to switch to a different crankbait. I like throw a Bomber Model 5A. It's 1 7/8" long (nice small bait) and weighs in at 1/5 oz. I had the same problem with trying to throw #5 Shad Raps and since I switched I can launch the Model 5A with no problems. Just a suggestion.

a 5a is one of my favorite lure still flys like a shot duck.

2 suggestions, based on your needs. If you are wanting the smaller profile, but need the heavier wieght, add weight either with tape or drilling and adding. You are much better at modifiying than I am , but like I said you can add weight to get it out there better and still maintain the smaller bait. Secondly as Rebasser the MASTER stated try a spinning reel, it's designs allows it to go further with lighter lures anyways.

i use a spinning reel with the small #5 ssr or a #4 sr. i also use it with a #6-8 husky jerk and a 1/8 oz buzz bit.


i was told by one of the guy's i work with to put a supend strip on the shank of the rear hook-i mite try this.

Here's what I've found out with casting the small cranks. This is what works for me. I don't use a 7' rod for the smaller cranks, I use a 6'6" medium action Shimano Convergence. I could never get them to cast decent on the 7' rod that I throw my other cranks on. I have a Shimano Chromica reel on it that I just love. It's a lower end reel, but with a little tweaking that baby casts just as good as some of my more expensive reels. I spooled it up with 10-12 Vanish. I can cast a Bomber Model 5A with no problems whatsoever with this setup. I also use it for Senkos and Flukes.

Maybe you should try a Quantum Energy reel, with Stren Flourocarbon. I think that should solve your problems.
You may wish to go with Excaliber baits.
Maybe even Bagleys. You may wish to try Zoom cranks, I'm sure that you can afford them.
I think these ideas are exactly what you need to do !

Granted, I'm only a beginning angler, I haven't caught the thousands and thousands of BIG bass that I'm sure that you have !!!!!LOL

actually bassman i don't have any zoom cranks. i like bagley's a's and b's . and bandit's 200's along with rapala's.of course lucky craft. as for big bass think the biggest one i have ever caught on a crank was 4 pounds.


dang i think the old and crippled bassman is starting to figure out. i am a legendary pain in the *** ......hmmmm...wonder why?????

Actually, we went to T-Town sat. I caught some pretty good fish on a Bagley's B-II.(shallow runner)
Also got some on a Bomber Crawfish crankbait.
The water is a little low, so the fish are out away from the bank.
In the event that you get a Zoom crankbait, they are awsome baits. (the tapp)
In the event that you are fishing around rocks, then get a Tapp w/a brown or a black back, and yellow sides. They go appx. 9'.
At BPS there 18 $ apiece. I know thats weigh up there on price. But the've got an excellent selection.
I can get some at the Fishin Fever for 14 $ apiece , but they don't have the selection that BPS has.

i heard about them just never used them. to be honest the best fishing at t-town is when the water is down a foot or two.

asked D.F.-him self-he said i was throwing to hard.and over torquing the crank.since then i have had no problems with the bait flying like a dead duck..
