Default March Bass Fishing

I was reading in the new field & stream yesterday that they recommend to use a shallow diving crankbait in a crawdad or crayfish in march, but i think that it is too cold here in ohio!!! What is your guys opinions on this? Thanks

Ryan

I think they probably were refering to the north side of a pond, where the angle of the sun warms up the shallows, target a northeast corner or northwest in 1-3 feet.

Really need to figure this spring thing out. It's annoying me not catching any fish. Reminds me of this past summer spending 8 weeks not catching a single bass or fish for that matter.

chris, while a lot of fish move to deeper water when the temps drop, not all of them do. you would be suprised how many bass you can catch in the general are of your summer hot spots. just remember when the water gets cold you need to slow down, suspending jerk baits are a great tactic just don't be affraid to pause for a while. i have caught many fish after a 8 or 10 second pause. when out last week and caught several farm pond bass on a spinnerbait, a tip for this is to bend the wire a bit spreading the blades away from the head of the spinnerbait this will cause more lift on the bait so you can slow it down but it will stay in the strike zone and not sink to much on ya. hope this helps

If it's a craw pattern it would be more logical to use a crank that's going to dig the bottom. I would use like a DT-10 because you can crank those extremely slow and they still stay down and retain their wobble at a very very slow pace. They are the slowest crank I've come across yet. When I say slow, I mean slower than slow rolling a spinner bait. Crawfish don't "suspend", they stay on the bottom.

I've been using crawdad colored cranks and rat-l-traps in shallower stained water when there has been some sun. The bass seem to move up from deeper water during those conditions. The water temperature is probably in the low 50's at best, but a warming trend seems to do wonders. Definitely try to stick to the north side since the water will be a little warmer. I believe rattling and grinding the bottom is key. A stop and go retrieve is always a good option.

RRW, I'm originally from the Cincy area but have been in NC for the last three years. It was only this past year I started bass fishing, so I'm used to fishing relatively temperate weather. I'll be moving back to Cincy late spring, and will need to train myself on bass fishing in the north. Any advice is appreciated. I don't have a boat, so if you know of any good places I can bank fish in southwestern Ohio, let me know.

Carolina rig people I've talked to have said the bass are already on their beds and spawning!

Went today to a farm pond. The water was stained and cold. My friend and I tried flukes, worms, brush hogs, and medium cranks and only caught one fish. We switched to the Manns Baby 1 in Crawdad and ended up catching 23 bass in 5 hours. My friend lost a hawg (at least 7 pounds) at the boat. The key for us was fishing the Manns over submerged weed beds.
I live in Western Kentucky, which is not that different from Ohio. (Southern Ohio that is)
Hope this helps.

We were sitting in about eight feet of water and casting to the shore line with a slow and steady retrieve to the boat. We caught a few right on the bank, but but most were 6-8ft from the shoreline.

Not one hundred percent sure, but best quess would be high 40's to low 50's.

rrw,

There are always fish shallow. But keeping them from seeing you first is a big ticket to catching them.

Chris,

where is Oveida? There is no reason you can't be catching bass year round in Florida. That is unless of course you don't fish. 2 months is a long time not fishing. Why don't you get out more. I realize school, and such things can keep you busy, but any canal, or pond should be accessible for bass, and you. Go out and fish, perhaps I can take you out sometime. Heck everyone else always catches fish with me LOL

well, crankbaits in march are great here on kentucky lake. thats pretty much what our tournament this weekend was won on. the water was 44 to 46 degrees though. The big fish was 8 pounds!! Big fat prespawn female caught on a crank in february?? From my experience, early and late winter are the best cranking months!

Lizards been so busy these past two months! The pond I fish is only 2 houses down but again I've been so busy. Got a new pool and addition in the process and gotta do all the extra work required with that and extra-curricular school stuff!

Oh and Oviedo is on the NE side of Orlando! Little bit south of Sanford if you know where that is or on the shores of Lake Jessup the Gator Capital of the world along with Lake Monroe!
