When the winds out of the west fishings the best. When it's out of the east, fishings the least.

Its funny ou started this thread. I have this feeling that a lot of older lures and techniques are really gonna start coming back. Fish dont see these presentations anymore, so they arent as conditioned to them and that makes them good again. Plus its just like classic cars, some of the baby boomers like to relive their childhood, so they go back to fishing the way they did as kids.
BUt again everything old school isnt really best. For instance, it is like wresting a wildcat to get my Dad to stop buying 5'6" pistol grip rods. That is what was big 20+ years ago, so he still buys em that way. |

creme worms and jitterbugs. This brings me back to my fishing philosophies, how you don't need high tech rods, expensive lines, or any mumbo jumbo. As long as you have your line in the water, you can catch fish. Ive bank fished for hours on end in spots where you wouldnt think there are even fish. Fishing has really taught me patience, in everything i do. I feel it's good to keep fishing simple, it makes you a better fisherman and keeps your senses more tuned in to everything around you, and makes it more relaxing(for me atleast)

If you can't find the bait fish, then follow the white birds.
Look for places you would be comfortable. (Sun in cold, shade in heat) When in doubt, set the hook. (Papaw never finessed fished)

Many of the old school bass guys I know fish one thing 90% of the time, a black jig. They catch a lot of fish with it too. They might crank every once in a while, but most of the time it is just a black jig.

I remember a day when I fishing a creek when was younger. At the time, the thought of losing a $1 bait was a huge impact on my budget so I kept casting to safe places just to get my bait back. An older guy was at the same creek but he was catching fish. He get see my obvious frustration and gave me some of the best advice I have ever gotten.
You can't catch them if you don't cast where they are. I would love to say how I caught a fish on the next cast, but in reality, I lost the bait in the tree I was trying to get under.

When seining minners in a stream.....
When ya find the minners, go up stream 20 yards er so, wade in and kick up the bottom makin yer muddy cloud. When the cloud hits o'er the minners, seine em. They don't know whichaway ta go. Hits a good way ta git em. Advice given by a guaranteed old timer.... |

makin spiders fer fishin, from another old timer
Take a thin needle with white thread and run it through a raisin making legs, then put the raisin on a small hook and let it dry for several days in the hot sun, it will harden and shrink holding the thread in and holding it on the hook. They only last so long in the water, but catch fish in the meantime. Save the hooks to use again.

Make a 4 inch tapered body using an old broom handle......the front end should just be the original size and the back end should be about a quarter inch smaller in diameter than the front end. Now drill a pilot hole in each end of the wood.....put a threaded screw eye in the back end and then take a pop bottle or beer bottle cap and drill a hole through the center and then drill another pilot hole and attach the beer cap to the front end with another screw eye. The cap makes a cupped shape like a popper. Paint the wooden body white and dry well using an oil base paint. When dry, on the back eye, tie two hair or feather jigs, one on a foot leader and the other on a two foot leader....tie your line to the front eye. The old timer showed me a couple he'd made and uses them for attracting and catching stripers. He also makes them with basswood, but when doing that he adds epoxy to the screw holes.
This is how he described it to me, but it would be good to paint the wood first including the end grain before attacing the cap and eyes. |
