Default Best lures for SMB

What are some of your goto baits for SMB? I generally fish for them around docks or where there is some rock. I generally throw small spinnerbaits, 4" craws, or jigs w/twister tails. The lakes that have SMB that I fish have nice fish along with a ton of little ones. What should I do to try for some of the bigger ones?

Thanks in advance,

Carolina rig with a Smallie Beaver (made by Reaction Innovations) or a Paca Chunk (made by Netbait), either one on a 1/0 hook.

chartruse spinnerbait with painted blades (chartruse)
also a mister twister 2-3 inch grub.
anything that resembles a craw on the rocks works great too.

My absolute favorite SM lure is a twin twail hula grub (preferably 5", sometimes 4") rigged on a 1/8 oz. Chompers stand up jighead.

The best colors seem to be green pumpkin, junebug, and black.

Now that is where you Northern boys have it over us Southerners-we just don't have the smalljaws the way y'all do, although the lake I'm fishing tomorrow is becoming a pretty good smallmouth fishery, but they are all pretty small.

I wouldn't rule out any category of lures for smallies. Conspicuously missing from your list are crankbaits topwaters and tubes. Most of my smallies are taken on cranks, probably because I use them a lot, but my biggest, plus a number of others, took my beloved Jitterbug.

I'd have to go along with JB, chartruse spinner bait. Also dart head with a Kalin's pearl grub.

Case plastics makes a pointy tailed senko type bait,it is called a "Jacks worm". It was created for the Smallies. But it is right a home with the Largies too. The color to get is called Natural..........Weightless or t-rigged with the smallest bullet weight you can find.

Albino Craw, what ever size works for the water you are fishing.
Black Jitterbug
Cranks, smallies like hard bottoms most often, like riprap cranks work well here.
Most anything used for LM

I would guess that about 20 percent of our dams have SMB. I have 3 dams and two rivers within 100 miles with smallies. One of them holds the current SA record - 7lbs. Unfortunatly our nature conservation authorities view the SMB as public enemy #1 due to them wiping out the small indigenous species. It is now an offence to stock them anywhere. But the existing stocks are doing well. Luckily they cannot do anything drastic such as poisoning without wiping out all the local fish as well.
Long live smallies!!

As for the Case plastics, check the Case home page or Land Big Fish.com. Try them, they arte truely a great bait, they offer them in 4 or 6 inch.
