Default Pre and Post spawning questions

I made it down to the pond yesterday and noticed a few have made it to the beds. Males guarding with the females just off the beds. I know that these are my early spawning ones and would rather not bed fish them. (Very small pond, so I don't like to mess with them on the beds)
What do you all prefer for the pre-spawn fish. I tossed flukes with limited success.
And then the follow on, what is the preferred bait for post-spawn fishing.
In past years, the fluke has been my go to, but want to consider other options.

Thanks
