Smile Ok, today's crazy question

Sonar

Now I've spent the winter learning or at least trying to learn the actual 'whys' of what a bass does and when it does it.

I know what they can SEE, HEAR, SMELL and what effect these transmissions have on how the bass reacts to said transmission.
The 'whys'.
One of the most intriguing of which was the fact that a bass' eyes take approx. 30-40 min. to adjust to light changes at dusk and dawn. Smaller the bass, the quicker the transition.

So if a bass' lateral line can 'sense' a pod of bait fish 30 yards away and actually know what that transmission is coming from.
It's hard for me to believe they don't/can't feel or sense a sonar signal.

Now anglers are ALL ACROSS the board on this question.
From, "I've seen bass bury their nose in the mud after hearing a boat approaching and then pulling it out once boat passes", to, "the frequency is to high to allow bass' senses to understand transmission".
Anglers who were ice fishing who saw and marked fish with electronics but dozens of others doing the exact same thing.
But no one getting so much as a nibble. They all turned off their electronics and the fish started biting.

Now you have the highly successful and recommended, Hydro Wave.
What do you think that thing is doing....transmitting electronic 'wave transmission' of sound.

So the 'bass can't hear it' argument, kind of looses a little ground.
As usual I have my thoughts on this topic. As usual my thoughts just lead to more questions and/or thoughts.

So I need the smartest most diversified group of anglers to share their thoughts on this.

So what you thinking ANGLERS?

Joe, I lost the question in there somewhere. What exactly are you asking?

Do you think 'sonar' is felt by the fish?
If so, what is the effect on the fish ?

Thanks Toney. I confuse myself so I can only imagine the confusion to others.

I guess it's to try and see how others feel about the topic in general as much as a direct question.

Do fishing sonars have an effect on fish and what is that effect?

Joe I'm clueless whether a bass can "feel/hear" the sonar beam. I have convinced myself that they can hear the little clicking noise coming from the transducer. I've caught fish directly under the boat with the sonar on hundreds of times. However I've also convinced myself that turning it off is to my advantage when I'm working finesse baits from a stationary position. (notice how I omited the word anchored but cleverly implied it)
I'm probably way off with this but I think a good wind/surface chop usually makes the bass I fish for less spooky, whether it's depthfinder noise or line size or anything else.

Here's a couple of not so crazy questions. Who has already had to cut the grass?(tommorow)
Who believes their local fish are in pre-spawn?(yes)

This has been argued to death here before.

I will only give a shortened view of my stance on the issue.

Fish can only hear low-frequency sound, due to the higher density of water, as compared to air.

So in essence, they can not hear 50, 83, or 200 kHz transducer signals.

Flame on.

I looked for it but must have missed it.
I don't want to rehash something that I can just read.

But maybe some have changed their position on the topic.
I don't know but I do know that I can't even SEE my grass and other than some cold weather masterbaiting, the fish around here haven't even transitioned yet.

Read this book. It talks about the fish's senses in great detail.

Knowing Bass: The Scientific Approach to Catching More Fish by Keith A. Jones PhD PhD (Jul 1, 2005)

Marty, read it twice this winter.
Thanks again Mac.

Marty you are right, Jones knows his stuff.
He had a recent BassMaster article that explained sight in ordinary language.
I like his book but I definitly understand those who struggle with all the science jargon.
But,

As usual my thoughts just lead to more questions and/or thoughts.
So I just keep researching and learning by hearing others views on the matter.

Wish Jones would do an update version...KVD did.
