The "Frozen Zone" of a senko.

Hey guys, I was reading around and found some good info on hook sizes for senkos.

Basically he said the smallest hook you can get away with is best. Because of what he called the "frozen zone."

Everyone knows (I would think, lol) about the wiggling action of a senko when it drops. He argued that the distance between the hook point and the hook eye is frozen and can't wiggle because it's tight between the hook eye and hook point.

So obviously, the larger the hook, the more length of the senko is frozen and that frozen section, can't wiggle as much. And with a smaller hook, less is frozen, so the senko can wiggle as much.

This made good scene to me, and I thought you guys might be interested as well. I plan this season, on using a smaller hook for my conventional 5" senko, like a 3/0 and 2/0, rather than the typical 4/0. But it's not time to boot the 4/0 at all, I plan to use the 4/0 just as much, to see how my catch-rate is effected, and how hooking is effected with the smaller hook.

I think that people overthink bass fishing. I have always used (since 2001) a 4/0 G-Lock worm hook on my 5" and 6" Senkos with a very, very high success rate.

Along those lines is why I think the wacky rig works so well. There is basically no "frozen zone". It is also why the type of plastic used to make the worms is important and in my opinion why many of cheaper brands don't work as well.

Although where you are right now, I think the whole thing is the "frozen zone".

The wacky rig was another point the guy brought up, and gave the same reason.

I do know that with some off brand stick baits the larger hooks will cause the bait to fall nose first and not horizontally. I think this has more to do with a bad salt content in a cheap bait than too big a hook though. I'm pretty sure I read that GY recommends using a 5/0 EWG hook with Senkos.

there are also many ways to rig any plastic that can overcome that frozen zone... i've been making my own wire plastic keepers to make my own shaky heads... maybee i'll show you guys sometime. I'm always making lures as i think making your own lures is a more sure fire way to fish with exactly what you want

I need to fish the wacky rig more (I always seem to forget), but I do go with smaller (sharpest available) hooks with my senkos.
