Default Swivel clips, Good or Bad?

I got sick of tying knots so I bought some swivel clips from my local fishing store and rigged them on my rods. Will the swivel affect the way a spinner bait or crankbait works?
thanks,
Cman

It depends on the swivel. Â*If you got the brass kind that the silver wire goes under a brass flap something like a safety pin-bad. Â*I quit using them years ago after the dang thing came open and I watched my favorite crankbait disappear into the depths. Â*The other kind-locking

are better, but I trust a Palomat knot a whole lot more than I do a piece of equipment that might come open. Â*Tying a knot may take a little longer, but I know I can trust it.

I agree...if you ever have one let go on you then you kick yourself for not tying direct. I know the swivel makes for quicker lure changes but I feel the risk it too much. At first I didn't have a lot of rods and reels so the swivel was the way to go. Also...spinnerbaits and swivels do not get along...they slide down the wire and cause the spinnerbait to stop working.

I use the locking kind. They fail me less than a regular knot does (pickerel teeth.)

Really speeds up switching lures too. Not great for spinners, buzzers, or crankbaits, but it can be done.

Only if you don't have a closed eye, and then a piece of surgical tubing works, just put it over the r bend b4 attaching the swivel. It also works on buzzbaits.

Well...I will chalk that one up to the "learn something new everyday" thing. Thanks Lizards for passing on the great idea.

i would say swivel clips are ok but dont use one to keep from tying knots.i retie alot, after every fish in a tournament.and if i havent caught a fish in a wile i tie just to make me feel better.i hate to break off a fish that i could have caught because i didnt take 10 seconds to tie a knot.

I guess you're better off tying a knot, like you said its only a few extra seconds.

I use the clips with out the swivel and haven't had any problems with them on crankbaits. Way easier to change baits and more action.

Good point, bassguy. Those are the only ones I would really consider using.

These are what he is tallking about:

They are called Speed Clips and are made by Norman.

(bassguy, I think those are what you are referring to. If not, please correct me ;D)

...

Uh, if you can... tie... a knot... in 10 seconds... then... uh, you probably... wouldn't need a swivel...

Perhaps not everyone can do that though.

You guys seem to talk about swivels coming apart. Never once have I lost a lure due to it... just to knots coming apart.

Reb, good clip! I got some of the speed clips last time I ordered from Cabelas, use them for crankbaits and suspending jerkbaits.

When you say snap swivels do you mean the safety pin type. If you do then i have caught things with those type of swivels and rubbers. By the way one or two more posts and you'll be a junior.

I use to use speed clips but I quit using them because The clip would come loose and you would lose your lure and your fish.

Â* Â* tying a knot in 10 seconds is not a big deal.if you cant do it yet you will be able to soon after you have done it long enough.

As much as I hate to admit the truth as my age has advanced (54) I cannot see to tie knots without reading glasses. Trying to balance sunglasses and reading glasses have driven me to swivels. Haven't lost a lure yet.

IMO the swivels are the same as any line or knot, you have to check them periodically for wear or issues. If it looks bad, replace it. But the ones with the extra bend are safer, than a standard snap swivel.

MrTwister,

I don't use them on my plastics, because I want it to look as lifelike as possible, and a swivel doesn't help that cause. Plus plastics are often fished in the weeds which is just another thing to catch moss or weeds with. Now on cranks, spinners, buzzbaits, those are reaction type baits, so the swivel, may even help with the action or a flash, so those are the types of things I will use them on. This of course is just my opinion, lots of others will probably disagree. And if you aren't using them just because you can tie a knot fast, well good for you, but everytime you tie a knot, you have a chance of it failing

I've done it for a bit now and it still takes me 1-2 minutes to tie a knot!
