Default Jerkbaits

Growing up in western KY, I fished a lot of ponds and areas with murky water. Jerkbaits were never in my arsenal of fishing. Now that I fish the great KY lake a lot, the lake becomes clear in the winter months and jerkbaits catch big sacks of fish. I understand that concepts or match the hatch and properly sizing your jerkbaits, fishing for suspended fish at certain depths, etc. But for whatever reason I've always been outfished when fishing jerkbaits. I've tried fast and slow cadencies, letting baits suspend for seconds, "walk the dog" types of motion, and several others. I can't seem to get it right.

Does anyone have any tips, cadences, pretty much anything that might help me or anyone else trying to learn this method? I really wish I could find a jerkbait seminar by KVD....

are you refering to hard or soft jerkbaits? What colors are you using? Are you adding scent? What size line? Are you possibly getting bites you can't feel because using mono? What areas are you targeting?

If you live near Benton I'd go into that basspro shop and get ya some rattling rogues, black n silver with a orange belly, even better if its been sprayed over with a teal color , ever so slightly. The guys at that tackle shop used to paint them for everyone, plus they carry a ton of rogues.
We always go to Ky lake in the spring and work the pea gravel points with rogues, of course the lake if full of pea gravel points, along with everything else...I prefer big bear cove or blood river on the Ky lake side..
usually throw and give it about 7-8 hard jerks, then pause(using susupending rogues only) , then mix it up, jerk jerk pause, jerk several times and pause, sometimes counting to 10-15 before starting again. Its agonizingly SSSLowww..

I'm refering to hard jerkbaits. I have 3 types I like, Xraps, pointer 78s and rogues. Depending on the situation I'll use different sizes of line, but my usual is 10 lb. test flourocarbon. I just think I jerk too hard or something....I like the one jerk, pause for a second, two jerks pause for 3 or 4 seconds, one jerk, etc. but thats not really workin for me. I like to fish north KY on main and secondary lake points. Um....colors I usually use are clown, table rock shad, and like an aurora black or american shad (in the lucky crafts). I dunno, I just don't have the skill other guys in my club have I guess....

I use the clown down there some, after that mid 90's rogue small mouth bassmasters tournie, it became a instant hit... most of the guys I fish with tug on that rattling rogue pretty darn hard.

I'm guessing the water temps are lower 40's to upper 50's Long pauses would be good, witth the suspending ones. I didn't have much success at KY/Bark myself, but with colder temps I do know slower is usually better. Watch the guys who are catching them, slight variations of your technique may be all the difference in the world, or where they are placing the baits, are they adding weight?
