Think I'll try the circle hook approach myself. I use some electrician's plastic shrink tubing when I wacky rig, to keep the bait from getting torn up so quick. Would probably work on the nose as well.

The Octopus Circle hooks by Gamakatsu are a good alternative to a true circle hook and work just as good. I've used them for wacky rigging, but they aren't my favorite for it.

I use them a lot when fishing with my little cousins for catfish in our pond as they're great for kids who don't get the whole "set the hook" concept yet.

Well a Week's worth of discussion only to go out yesterday and get SKUNKED! Not one freaking Bass entered the boat. What a terrible day on the water!

Still beat being at home doing Honey-Do's

With circle hooks you don't really set the hook. You just reel down while slowing pulling the rod tip back.

A fish can actually swallow the circle hook, and it will come back up the esophagus and hook the fish in the corner of the mouth. It's a great hook for catch and release.

I you want to wacky rig it. Try cutting a piece of 3/8" electrical shrink tubing to a 1/4" width. Slip it over the end of the worm. Hook your wacky hook right through the tubing. This keeps your hook at a better angle than O rings do, and it works great.
I bought the tubing at my local hardware. 3 pieces cost about $2.50. I've been using them all season and still have enough left for several more years. I've save a lot of money on worms.

This works WAY better than O rings, IMO. No more trade off between better hook angle and preserving the worm.

Im going to throw in my 2 cents even though you've gotten enough help from the fellow boardmembers I use the same hook as you for wacky rigging.. but for Texas-rigging I use a 3/0 EWG hook, it's MUCH better for texas-rigging in my opinion.. but those hooks will work too that we use for wacky rigging, just up the size to maybe 1/0 or 2/0
