Is Cranky old enough to be a reel connoisseur?

And why has he decided that he needs a spinning at the expense of not owning a baitcaster? Real fishermen and connoisseurs either use baitcasters or fly rods. Spending that much on a spinning is two times a waste of money, first because the spinning reel is inferior in many regards to baitcaster, and second because Van Staals and Stellas are horribly overpriced, even if they are margninally better than other spinning reels.

Young Cranky, first among bassfishin.com's nouveau riche!

i need a spinning because i dont have any baitcaster rods, and ive figured out abitcasting was too complicated when i tried one out at walmart. for the pond i fish, i dont really need a baitcaster. baitcasters are for heavier line, and the regular test for this pond is 6. im already going high with 10. plus, i might get a deal if i buy the rod and reel ffrom the same place... it is 850 bucks, my dad agreed to it as it is, but hey, if we can save some cash theres nothing to lose

Cranky, A spinning reel is a spinning reel no matter what spinning reel you buy. The designs are pretty much standard from the cheapest reel to the most expensive. The, size, spool capacity, bearing count and the material its made out of is the difference. In my opinion , as long as you get a metal frame and metal sides, you have got a good spinning reel. The gear shaft rides in a recessed area on the side plates, if the side plates are made of plastic, in time, the gear shaft will wear the recessed area and it will not work as well as it did when brand new.I have always said they need to address this problem by adding a brass bushing , so you can replace it as it gets worn as they did in baitcasting reels. The metal sided spinning reel will perform better longer, therefore the price difference. You pay for what you get to an extent. The Stella and Van Staal are for those who can afford to spend more money than you have to in order to get a good product. The Pflueger Medalist Dodgeguy mentioned would be a good long lasting reel.I bought a Browning Citori reel. The reason I chose that was it has 8 bearings and a metal frame and metal sides. The other thing that made me decide that over anything else was they were $99.99 regular price and I got it on sale for $49.95.I suspect it will out last me providing I take the time to clean and lube it once a year or at least when needed. For what its worth, the Van Staal is the better of the 2 between it and the Stella. The reason is the warranty. That kind of warranty wiil last you a lifetime providing the company stays in business that long.P N J

Cranky, did you and your dad sit down with a lawyer and write this contract. haha just messin with you. Are you sure you dont want to check out a baitcaster? you could have alot more good options if you are willing to try that out. but i understand , spinning reels are my preference too.

well hey, i wanted to be a lawyer, but my dad made me be a doctor. so he wrote it with a wanabe lawyer lol. and i already tried to find the advantages of both kinds of reels. i think spinning is much easier to use and works pretty well. plus, theres no backlash, gears or magnets to worry about

Spinning is hassle free, but to run wiht the big boys, you need a good castin setup. Spinning will launch things a mile, but youll have a hell of a time in cover situations. 6 lb is awfully light, I save it forsuper gin clear waters wiht flurocarbon. If I were you I would look into a caster. However, I reccomend, that if you do get a spinning setup, get the rod in 7ft M action

im getting the rod in 6'8, but ok ill go with 7. and i dont plan on catching any giants at my level. even then, the stella could probably handle em. i fish 10 pound test anyways. and even with a baitcaster i wouldnt be able to take big fish

If you can, find a Quantum Energy series in the 2005 model. They don't have that "rain bow color". Use to cost appx. $160.00. Now they are priced at no more than $130.00. Bought some for $109 recently.

if you want to waste your money that's fine by me.have you ever lost a rod in the drink?$800 sinks as fast as less $.if i were you i would buy 3 combos.here is what i would get.

combos 1 and 2 spinning

http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...rTarget=browse

or
http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...rTarget=browse

in 6-6 or 7 medium and m-h
with 2 of these reels
http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...=SearchResults

that would be $500

and then

a 6-6 mh casting rod

http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...rTarget=browse

or

http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...rTarget=browse
with this reel

http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...rTarget=browse

so for $800 you get 3 awesome combos that if you take care of them will perform just as well as the one you are thinking about.i'm not saying that the one you are thinking about isn't top shelf.it absolutely is.but you can get stuff that is every bit as good for far less cash.

yeah but thats the thing. i signed for only one rod and reel, and my dad wont change it. i said that at the beginning of the thread. if it was up to me, id buy 2 or 3 combos that were like 300 dollars each, and drop some megabass. but i cant. ill remember to ask for cash when i go to harvard or Johns hopkins, so i can buy what i need

nope

you said you are going to use 10# test instead i would get #8 yo zuri you will be able to cast farther and the line is strong enough you don't have to worry about it breaking if you hook into a big one. or you could get #20 powerpro

Doc, Maybe you should have an ambulance on stand by when your father gets the bill for his contract agreement. You think he doesn't trust us American fisherman now, wait until he finds out what his son has in store for him. Your too young to remember the Charlie Chan movies, but I suspect your not going to be #1 son when he receives the tackle list. If your not on the site for more than 2 days, I will know your grounded. I will keep track for how long it lasts before your #1 son again. P N J
