First off, I know alot of people on here are going to recommend you getting a baitcast rod and reel. I'm here to tell you spinning works just as good, if not better from the shore. I'm a big fan of Shimano spinning reels, and the rod you've selected isn't bad either.

Now, the thing I wanted to comment on is your hardbait selection. I find it's hard to go wrong with a Rapala. Shad-raps, Huskey Jerks, Floating Minnows, Rattlin' raps, whatever the lure is, if it's made by Rapala, it's a quality bait.

The reel is Shimano's best spinnign reel I belive, the Rod is good, but a Kistler would be best or Airrus. Soft Baits, why not go wiht Gary Yamamoto? Hard Baits, megabass is good, but expensive, I would go with Rapala, and get 4 times as many baits for the money. BTW, doesnt it seem like your taking advantage from your dad?

ineccess- i dont really like the way baitcasting works... seems too complicated.

and oh yeah, i forgot rapalas... ill have to order some of those.

powerbass- the rod could vary. i still dont know what would be ebst. just chose this first, probably will change. and alluringbaits claims their senko type baits are 20x better, and i have tons of testimonials. plus, about megabass vs rapala, i get 50 baits only. i cant get like 200 rapalas instead of 50 megabass. ill have to mix em up. and nah i aint taking advantage. i dont even want this career. this was his bribe he totaly offered it himself and said he'd pay whatever price

ya i'd just get a spinning reel and rod because they can be just as good, especially from shore. I have a baitcaster but i almost always use my spinning rod because i fish almost always while wading or from shore. The plastics look pretty good for a selection....Those megabass lures are in my opinion, really sexy and they catch fish, but a rapala does the same and you can get 5 rapalas for the price of one megabass bait...thats my opinion though.

oh and for ponds, if you fish them, definately get some rapala jointed minnows-i almost never have to take them off because they are getting hits almost every time.

if I were fishing a 5 acre pond, I'd definitely want a boat...but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. The stella is Shimano's top of the line spinning reel..but my opinion is that you don't need to spend near that much money to get a good quality spinning reel.

If it were me getting this kind of deal..I'd knock down on all my things and take care of the whole spectrum. You can catch just as many fish on a 70 dollar rod and a 70 dollar reel as you can on a 300-500 dollar one. I'd go lower, get everything I need, and be happier.

Default I agree

I'm with Ken on this one Cranky,You can get a ton of stuff if your dad is coughing up this kinda money.i have gotten bait/reel combo's for $100.00
from Bass Pro and they are just great for me...You could get a really nice rod holder to hold your rods in,tackle bags, rain gear, waders.Think about all the times you were out there fishing and thought man I wish I had this when I went fishing. So what I'm saying is be just a tad smart on your purchase, remember the rod and reel is not gonna make you a great fisherman, but you will make yourself a great fisherman...i hope that made sense .Big Congrats on the Med. get the st. croix triumph series rod they are alot cheaper and just as good and get a pfluger spinning reel that is what i use and they are awsome and you will have anough to buy that small boat

even if you can reach the middle you get a different angle on things fishing from a boat in the middle of the pond in a boat.

I got one for ya cranky, talk dad into getting you a bass guide for a day on some lake near ya, you'll probably learn more in that one day than 10 years on your own...probably about a 250 dollar gift for 4-8 hours..it would be worth it.
