Default What ever happened to the Zookenstien?

I might as well tease the new comers about it. Seeing none of them have ever laid eyes on one. Does anyone have an idea what it is or how one might get this incredible bait?

Now I would like all necommers to PM Zook and bug the crap out of him about the famous Zookenstien!

Funny thing this topic came up.

Zook, last march I lost a ZooknStein and didn't tell you. I was pretty pissed about it too. It broke the line on some grass in 2 feet of water, but it was too muddy to find it.

I visited that same lake for the first time since that day today, and its like they blew the dam up. Its down 6 feet. Where the ramp was, there is now a landbridge extending all the way across to this island.

Anyways, I remembered where I lost the Stein and set off walking down the shoreline. And lo and behold, I walked right up to the zooknstein, picked it up and put it in my pocket. Its still in pretty good shape. I mean the prop is a little bent, but the diving lip and the treble hooks are all good. I was amazed that the plastic tail is still in good shape. Normally swimbait like tails deteriorate in the water. Oh yea, and it still rattles. Anyways, I tied the thing on and proceeded to limit out. Its just an incredible lure. You kids need to get your hands on one if possible. Possibly you could tempt zook to give you one by giving him a gift. He is partial to porn. Oh well, just one of those things.

Exclamation

When I first joined the site, I heard of the legendary zookenstein. I tried to pry the secret out of our more senior members, but they had clearly been sworn to secrecy...

I was not to be deterred, I scoured old magazines, watched every show, I even checked other message boards. I found lots of rumors, some hints, and a great deal of resistance and secrecy...

Clearly, the Zookenstein was a closely guarded secret...

I had nearly given up, when the window of opportunity cracked open...

On a dark, desert highway with only my faithful dog, Bear, along for the ride, my '87 Bronco sputtered and died. Just over the next rise in the road the faint glow of neon called Bear and I forward...

The fading neon light proclaimed simply, "Rosa's.” Bear and I tentatively strode through the swinging doors and took up a spot at the nearly empty bar. The bartender looked like she had been ridden hard and put away wet, but she poured a good beer for me and a generous tequila for my dog.

In regards to my dead Bronco, she pointed out a shriveled older fella propped up in the corner with a half empty bottle of JD and a battered guitar in his lap, "Hee's a meechanic," she said turning her back as she cleaned some dirty glasses. Incidentally, she looked infinitely better from behind.

As I approached the old fella, I realized he was singing softly... I leaned forward as a haunting tune reached my ears,

"...enstein... was once mine, many feesh I land,
with the 'stein in my hand..."

Was it possible, could he be singing of the legendary lure, as elusive a Loch Ness and as valuable as the Ark of the Covenant?

I forgot about my truck and Bear and I settled down, to many beers/tequilas and listened to our new friends mournful song...

It told the story of two fishing buddies, one a young man who favored red headed Latinos in tight jeans and the other an older, singing, fishing vaquero.
Apparently, the two chased bass and @ss over much of the southwest together with great success. The song glorified this all in a manner I am not able to capture here.
Let it suffice to say, Stairway to Heaven, Hotel California and every Skynrd song ever written pale in comparison.

The tale peaked with the creation of a legendary lure shared by the friends with unmatched success. However, as all great ballads must, the song ended in tragedy.
A fight over a beautiful Costa Rican maiden, who favored the younger man, destroyed the friendship and the fishin'...

The younger man disappeared into the sunset with the Costa Rican maiden and left the legendary lure as a peace offering to his older friend, who, crushed at the loss of the woman and the friend, vowed never to use the lure again....

When the song ended, I asked the singer if he was the man in the song and if he still had the lure...

"Yes it ees me in thee song, and si I steel have my Zookenstein."

I was barely able to raise my voice above a whisper. "May I see it?” I asked.

Si, I will show you in de morning, for tonight I weesh to drink tequila with this magnificent dog..."

Sadly, my story ends here, you see Bear and I have never been able to resist a night of beer and tequila in a dusty cantina with a trashy bartender; I passed out somewhere late in the night...

In the morning, I awoke in the back of the Bronco with the Bear passed out in the drivers seat on the outskirts of the nearest town. No sign of the Cantina, no sign of my singing friend, no sign of the 'stein.
Just a note on the windshield, "Gone Feeshin"

Needless, to say my dog and I searched high and low for that Bar and that singing fisherman, to no avail.... On the bright side, the Bronco had never run better!
So, although I know the Zookenstein is real, I have yet to see it...
Although my dog gets a sh%t eating grin every time I bring this story up, Hmmmm....

Brushhog, I am familiar with this song and the connection it has to Led Zeppelin.

The only other thing I can tell you about this mystery is that the fish referenced in this song werent actually bass, but mudsharks. And it took place off of pugent sound.

Thats all I feel that I can say. Both Zook and John Paul Jones would kill me if I said anything more about that incident.

But you're getting close. The truth is out there. I just hope you get a break.

don't feel bad bout not knowing bush-hawgy... many have tried but few have found sucess in knowing what lies in a stein..but heed this warning there is more than one verison. and only two among "them" has seen them all.. one is in the land of gators and hawg haulin he is good at.. the other helped me design it to perfection with his decades of knowlage...

"there i stand a foot on the troller,an a quantum in the hand. i rear back and fire the stein. as the reels sings it's song i know the cast is going wrong. i apply pressure on the reins as the bait responds it drops into the water without a splash.the stien slices thru the water like a razor sharp knife.a bass drills it from below runs to hide in the maze of brush as i set the hook with reckless abandon. the fray continues as i work the fish toward the boat. as i pluck the fish from the water by it's gaping jaw. i remove the stien pull out the camera with a comment of "smile b!tch i'll make a ya famus"..

this is my story and i will stick to it..

WTL, thanks for the encouragement !

Since that adventure, the faithful Bear and I have ventured far and wide, visiting Monks in Tibet, Druid priests in Bavaria, reclusive hermits in the Everglades, Native American Shaman in the Dakotas, and some less than savory brothels in Tijuana in search of the 'stein.... No Luck...

As long as there is breath in my lungs, fur on Bears feet, and beer in the cooler we will continue the quest... I urge all unknowing Bassers to seek the light with us, United We Stand!

I believe Jimmy V. said it best, " Don't give up, don't ever give up!"

Somethings cannot be bought, (Ask George Steinbrenner and Dan Snyder) The satisfaction comes from the journey more than the destination...

Rumor has spread that a Z'stein was spotted in a remote part of the Texas pan-handle, Bear and I are loading the cooler and firing up the Bronco, YA GOTTA BELIEVE!

If you look real close at Zook he reminds me of an over sized Ron Jeremy!
or Ron could be better looking!

For those who are following the story.... Bear and I are returning from a disappointing trip to a remote pond in the Texas panhandle.

Legend was a zookenstein had been spotted stuck in the highest branch of the thorniest mesquite tree on the north side of the pond.

The trip was long and dusty, surprisingly cold, and devoid of any enticing senoritas. That did not stop Bear from sampling the local talent, I abstained. Incidentally, Bear has acquired a nasty rash, and is in desperate need of an antibiotic!

The Tree was incredibly thorny and gnarled, the 'stein nowhere in sight. Our guide, (who wishes to remain nameless, but is a fisherman of some reknown on this board), assured us there was a lure of unknown origin wedged high in the tree.

The tree being what it was, I sent the dog up.... Sadly the lure was not a Zookenstein, although it was intriguing... take a look below, Clearly not a 'stein!

Any idea what it is? I'll post the answer for enquiring minds later. For now Bear and I are driving home....
