Default Rods or Reels

What do you fellows think is more important. The Rod or The Reel. I ask this because I am thinking about getting a new baitcaster and want to know what to spend the most moeny on. I am not sure on which is more important. What do you think.

I mostly agree LOL. Depending on what bait you are fishing, the reel could be more important, such as a buzzbait IMO. But I would spend more on the rod, for any kind of worming, cranking, or jigging, drop shot, c-rig. I mean a good broom handle and a decent reel would work for topwaters.

Both the rod and reel are important but the money to quality ratio is also important. In my opinion, you can get away with a cheaper rod. You can't cut corners with the reel.

I was going to reply that it depends but not many people, specially beginners, are in the $$$$$ position of purchasing several rigs for specific purposes Lizards, but with a good rod you can do a lot..

Itīs the problem when these kind of questions arise, many of us have one rod for each purpose or technique which leads us to 5-6 rods or even more on the deck and we switch back and forth between the various setups we have, but what can you say to someone thatīs looking just for one setup ? spend the most you can on the rod, I think a so-so reel on a killer rod is better than a killer reel on a so-so rod.

Deffinately the rod is WAY MORE IMPORTANT! I am gonna say this cause I started out with the cheapo rods and gradually went up the ladder to where I now have 4 really great baitcast setups and two nice spinning....a crappy rod won't cast baits as far and your feel and hook setting power will be limited....also the cheap rods won't last that long and you will snap some or they will gradually become too flexible....IMO

Ugly Sticks are not bad except for the weight....lol. If you fish a couple of hours a trip then...they will work..but I think if you fish 8 hours at a time...they will probably get to be a pain.

My dad has an Ugly Stick Lite, and it is pretty sweet for the price. Berkeley makes good rods, I think I'm buying a All Star, a Fenwick, or a St. Croix next. I'm gunning for the St. Croix Premier.

well i have three poles, 2 spinning (a diawa samurai 7i and a pfluger gold medalist) and a calcutta baitcaster, i use all of them for everything, i dont have different stuff for different styles, so a medium 6' 6" or 7' ugly stik works awesome, but next i might get an ugly stik light, as they are lighter. but i do have differnt lines on them so that kinda dictates what i will use on what pole sometimes.

I have a bunch of crap combos, then I have an old (35-40 years) Browning Silaflex/Shakespeare spinning combo thatr I love, and I am getting a
S. Croix/Pfleuger combo soon.

I think it depends on the application. For example, with techniques where feel is required, i.e. worms and jigs I think the rod is more important. For throwing baits that have a lot of wind resistance like a buzzbait the reel is more important IMO.

It's not to often that we disagree , but when "Flipping" the reel isn't even used. So why would that be more important

These last two posts have me completely lost, but I'm definitely not picking a side

Rider, very deep and interesting question. My answer, balance. Buy the best that you can afford of both. In your rod, you have your control and sensitivity, but the reel contains your moving pieces, which, if cheap, are easy to break/massively screw up.
