Default Ever burned your thumb on the spool?

A couple of days ago, I bought a Quantum Accurist PT. It's nice - hope it's worth the money. I paired it with a mh 6'6" rod. Anyway, the first time I used it, I started out fishing with lite jigs. Then, I put a heavier lipless crank on just to test out how far I could cast with the reel. I don't know why, but on the first cast, the spinning spool burned my thumb. It actually left two parallel thin burn marks on my thumb. I immediately wanted to take my thumb off the spool when I felt it but didn't because I figured a burned thumb is not as bad as the backlash that would have occurred.

umm,i rarely get backlashes that i cant fix.the first thing i do when i have a backlash is turn the drag up,then i put my thumb on the spool and reel forcefully about 3 times.then i pull.

saw it on bill dance one day this year, hasnt failed since.

Never burned it as such, but have had it heat up on occasion

Been doing that to get a backlash out for years, kh-read it in Bassmaster. Most it will work on, but occasionally you will get one of those world-class backlashes where only surgery will fix it.

I did this a couple of times about 8 years ago when I was first starting out with baitcasters and throwing cranks like you mentioned. How long have you been baitcasting? I haven't done that in years. I kinda just lay my thumb on the spool. Probably kinda weird but I never get a birds nest that I can't pick out. After years of fishing you get a feel for your reels and its like second nature.

I've had it heat up too. One of the worse things I did was when I was trolling for walleyes with a spinning rod, I was holding the line wrapped around my index finger so I could feel a hit and got a bad snag. I went crazy trying to unwrap my finger. I almost jumped out of the boat. Ended up with a deep cut around my finger. Never did that again.

This is my second bait cast reel. I usually use very little thumb pressure. Usually I just kind of hover my thumb over the spool. Must of been a one time thing.

I have burned my thumb but under different circumstances. I used my Daiwa procaster for snook and reds when I lived in Florida and I was in vacation in the keys and accidentally (I emsphasize ACCIDENTALLY) hooked a huge tarpon. I tried to slow his first run and burnt my thumb. I had 20 pound mono with 50lb fluoro leader. No way I woulda ever landed that fish but I got burnt and my reel got ruined.
