Default Ah, the joys of home ownership

About 2 months ago I had water rinning down the street starting at my house. Called a plumber and he fixed a cracked PVC pipe. About a month ago same problem, but this time we couldn't find it so we replaced the line going into the house with copper instead of PVC. So, all told I'm out about $1000 bucks and two rods (traded a couple I don't use for a couple of hour's labor ;D ). Guess what? Noticed water out front, opened up the meter housing and it was full of water. Had the plumber back out but there was no water usage showing up on the meter, so we figured it was the water that was in the bypassed pipe draining out. I just went out and scooped all the water out of the meter housing and yep, you got it, ANOTHER leak. However, this one is not on my side of the meter, so it is the city's responsibility. At least i don't have to pay for that-directly any way. Now I get to see my taxes at work ;D

You got that right, Zooker!

No hard freeze, WTL-that would have been apparent real quick. San Antonio has the worst soil in the country except for California when it comes to the ground shifting. Foundation repair is big business here. My water pipes are just the latest victim.

Zooker, wait a sec and let me teach ya something... ;D

The reason I asked Rebb about the freeze was because he is located so far south. A lot of times when folks in the warmer areas of the country are putting in water lines and especially sprikler systems, they think they can get away with barely covering the lines with dirt cause it never freezes - and then once every 10 years you get that freakish hard freeze even in San Antonio or Phoenix or Mobile or Gainesville and everybody finds out next year when they turn the sprinklers on.

Another common problem is people who don't know how to glue pvc try to do it without primer and don't let the pipe soften up, then you get some pressure in the line and you get a leak everywhere there is a 90 or a joint of some type.

Hope they get it fixed for ya this year LOL. WTL is correct, I used to work underground construction, and if it aint deep enough it's gonna freeze and break. I have worked where frost line in Indiana was 36 inches deep(froze my butt off too). I believe you did have some snow this year if I'm not mistaken Reb. Don't know how cold it got, but perhaps just cold enough. NOTE, I will never have a house or main water line in PVC, it's too dang easy for it to break or freeze and crack. Copper or the newer braided type lines are much better. A little more yes, but not in the long run
