Default Smelting on Friday!

Well, yesterday I killed a mosquito. Depending on shade, some parts of the ground still have snow. The pond still has some ice.

However at the river, the icebreaker came and did its work, and some water is free to cast from shore! Since open water season doesn't begin until April 1st, we aren't allowed to go striper fishing.

but we can smelt! I've actually yet to do it, but I've heard how fun it can be. For those unfamiliar with smelt, they are about 6 inches long and travel in enormous schools. You use treble hooks to snag them when ripping through a school. (No catch and release, obviously. Food/stored bait.)

Signs of spring up here. Getting very close to 50 degree highs. Songbirds return. Ducks and geese. Snakes come back out (in reference to another post).

$24 for that fishing license, let's make it worth every penny!

Lone,
I saw an article in either my Field and Stream or Outdoor Life that showed a guy wading near the bank scooping smelt up with a hand held net? Is that legal where you are?

Ha, well, I went to the river with two friends and we made some casts for about 2 hours, but didn't catch any fish. Ah well.

We had a lot of fun in the day after leaving the river.

We nearly called a girl, posing as a victoria's secret telemarketer, conducting a survey on pantie preference

Welcome to warped sense of humor.

I actually had some good pictures, such as a plastic spoon we caught (no kidding) and also one of us in a broken shopping cart while being tipped over, but the camera batteries were gone. Alas! Next time perhaps.

Lone, They are great to eat.As Zooker said its legal here in NY to net them.On a good run you can fill a garbage can full of them in a few hours of wading and dipping. The downside of it is you have to clean them all. We use scissors to clean them. P N J
