I'm going to suggest a tactic that I've never tried, but want to try later this winter;

Have you ever heard of the float and fly? They use it up on Dale Hollow in tinursee when the water drops below 50 for monster smallies, and that is a very deep clear lake. Its basically a tiny jig fished on a leader with a bobber, and it allows you to target suspended fish hovering over structure. Again, I don't know how to do it, but I want to learn as it sounds like a fish catching presentation to me and we have some similar waters down here. You may look into it as well.

Try fishing a large white spinnerbait with a huge willow over the humps, stick ups, drop offs, ledges and any other structure the fish seem to be suspending off of. Fish it as slow as you can as long as the blade is spinning. Try jiging its somewhat but not alot of drastic movement. Fish it in the areas the fish should be and make several casts in the same area. If this doesn't work continue to induce alcohol and the fish won't matter so much.

The float n Fly is deadly for all bass in the winter when the fish are suspended. There are certain things that you must do for it to be effective, The first is use a very long and light action rod. The fly has to be fished on 4 to 6 ilb test. A long rod helps play the fish on the light line. Next be sure you tie the fly on in a manner that will make it stand level from the knot. You can fish the fly as deep as 20 feet. Do not over fish the lure. A slight breeze is enough action. Watch the float very closely. Many strikes will not take the float under. The float may just move slowly side ways or even rise up. Slip floats dont work.The cast is a real work of art when you have 10 to 20 feet of line out in front of the float. Back cast and hesitate until you hear the fly hit the water ,then forward cast. We fish this a lot at Norris from 50 degree water down but only when the smallies are suspended and wont hit a Silver Buddy or Hair Jig and rind. The fly needs to be very small like 1/16. Duck feathers make good ones. It seems the ones that have a slight fleck of orange or blue seem to work best. This method was actually adapted in Tennessee from a crappie method.We have been fishing it for years. The best areas are the ends of bluffs or 45 degree sloping banks with hard bottoms. If you find bait with fish under on your sonar fish the fly about a foot or two above the fish. Fish2win

Cold ? Water is between 34-37 degrees surface temp depending on the lake I am at. Rocky terrain, a 1/2 -3/4 oz. football jig with a Chompers spider grub, use your electronics to find the fish, look for sloping rocky areas, they don't have to be a big area in order to hold alot of fish. P N J
