Default poaching ring busted

"Operation TAKE-EM," an undercover wildlife law enforcement investigation conducted by officers of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife, culminated today with the arrest of seven suspected poachers in Hamilton County.
The individuals are accused of several types of violations, primarily waterfowl violations that included over limiting of ducks and geese, closed season hunting of waterfowl, baiting violations, hunting non-game birds, hunting under a hunting license revocation and failure to maintain proper records as a taxidermist. The bulk of the illegal activity is said to have occurred in Butler and Hamilton Counties, but an over bag of walleye violation occurred on Lake Erie and additional waterfowl violations may have occurred out-of state.
The seven suspected poachers have been charged with 63 counts for misdemeanors of first, third and fourth degree, for violating Ohio’s wildlife laws. According to investigators, additional individuals may be charged, pending further investigation.
Ohio wildlife officers issued summons today for the Hamilton County Municipal in Hamilton County. The charges for a fourth degree misdemeanor can carry a maximum fine of $250 and 30 days jail. The charges for third degree misdemeanors can carry a maximum fine of $500 and 60 days jail. The charges for first degree misdemeanors can carry a maximum fine of $1000 and 180 days jail. Additionally, hunting and fishing licenses may be revoked and equipment used in to violate the Ohio’s wildlife laws may be forfeited.
"The alleged poachers are habitual violators of Ohio’s wildlife laws. They have stolen countless wild animals from the citizens of Ohio," said James Lehman, Law Enforcement Administrator for the ODNR, Division of Wildlife. "This investigation was initiated because of poaching complaints received through the Division of Wildlife’s, Turn in a Poacher hotline from sportsmen in Ohio" said Lehman. "
After receiving information for the past several years, reference these individuals, the Division of Wildlife was able to place officers in an undercover capacity at this location. “Officers were given a unique opportunity to strike a blow against waterfowl poaching in this community” according to Lehman.

Established in 1982, the T.I.P. program allows Ohioans to call toll-free, from anywhere in the state to report wildlife violations. Calls regarding wildlife violations can be placed anonymously at 1-800-POACHER (800-762-2437) or through the ODNR, Division of Wildlife’s website.
