Thumbs down Bilge plug question

Why do T-handle bilge plugs have that "spare" washer on the T-handle? It just flops around, doesn't seem to serve any purpose at all. The snap-handle plugs don't have it.

Some of the old style transom tubes had a tab w/ a small hole in it. That way you could attach the plug to the tube by a wire or string. Haven't seen one of those old tubes in years though.

T handle not only inserts into hole but twist or tighten handle to where its a tight fit,may then touch rear washer,if it has one not all do.Even the snap ones need to be turned till they are a tight fit when snapped.Prefer the T myself, ive lost a snap one when hung up in a brushpile.
Lesson learned I do carry a spare.

Good advice there! The T-handle plug screws in with the washer being a seal, the snap style relies on expansion of the plug to keep it in place.

I still have the original plug that came with my 1989 Champion and it has the tab with a little hole in it. I don't use it anymore, but don't have the heart to pitch it.
