I don't go by gear ratio, I go by line retrieve rate. The line diameter & spool diameter & gear ratio determine the line retrieve. I like to stay between 19-21" line retrieve for crankbaits. P N J

Excellent answer J&P, gear ratio has little to do with reel speed, for those big lipped divers I like somewhere around 13-15" of retrieve, for regular divers pretty much what J&P said.

sorry to bring up an old topic, but i had to reply to this one. i've been using the same reel for crankbaits and i've been really disappointed. it was messed up, the drag didnt work, so i had it rebuilt. first tourney i fished with it after it got rebuilt, and it broke down again. after that, i just said screw and picked up a Quantum Energy PT reel with a 4.4:1 gear ratio. im not ultra concerned with sponsorship stuff, as im really not into what garcia has been putting out lately.

Default the c3

Well in ref to the 4500c3 I can tell you my experience with this reel. I found 2 at one of the major sports stores about 4 months ago that were on close out. They were really inexpensive so I bought them both. I have fished them both for about 3 months, each reel has about 30 hours total on them and for some strange reason I am having the same problem with both of them. Seems to be a bearing problem. Once I cast then try to turn the handle to begin the retrieve....It gets stuck. Will not reel in without spinning the spool with my fingers. I took both reels in to be serviced the "reel mechanic" said the bearings were starting to get "squared off". Take it for what its worth. But I have 9 baitcasters and never had this problem in 20 years of fishing. Nice looking reel but if I had it to do over, I would choose something else.

I'm happy with Quantum high end reels and a few Shimano..I started out with abu garcia and many others and they did the job, but I think quantum is the one I'll stick to if I ever wear the ones out I have, and they will be 11 years old next season.

Ifn you can find em Lew's speed spools. Best da## crankbait reel ever made imho. Still find a few floating around. I do hate having to mentally adjust my retrive rate to the lure I am using, thats why I fish the lews when I am cranking.

Excellant post on the reteive rate in inches per handle turn.

ZOOK

Did I hear you say that you use a Ambassaduer Torno. What a die hard Quantum man like you. LOL

i know laser but for me the torno which has 6.2 gears -i think- i find that smoking a trap with a 5.1 is painful. and i get the "right" speed easier.. don't know excatly why but come september i put this reel on my cranking stick and start catching fish on cranks.. rest of the year it is on my jerkbait stick..

i have no idea why i do this but it works for me..

If in the event that you can find one, get an ABU 4600 'Winch" reel. It has a 3:8 to one retrieve ratio. Otherwise I too suggest the Lews Speed spool. These days they have a BB1NGS. It has a 4:1 gear ratio.
