Default Voltage regulators

Ok so i just installed my third rectifier/voltage regulator in my 200 hp Johnson in as many years. So my question is, what is causing these these things to burn up? since this is the third time i decided to replace the thermostats, but after testing them they both check out good. Oh by the way the first and second went out because the stator was over charging but that isnt the case this time.

this is something that has me wondering ryan. i haven't had the same trouble with mine as of yet. and i ain't no mechanic by NO means. but 2 in 2 years tells me that something ELSE may be wrong. wires shorting somewhere? burned maybe? something is DEFININANTLY wrong somewhere.

Ranger...how do you know it isn't an over-charging problem? If it was the two times previously, what is different now? Electricity is one of my hobbies , and usually, it is over-charging that fries regulators. Either that or excessive heat.

i tested the output from my stator and it was charging exactly what the paperwork that came with my regulator specified. Nofear you are definately thinking along the same lines as me but the stator is new and still works like its supposed to so my second thought was excessive heat. I changed the thermostats lastnight but i tested the old ones and they were opening at 150 degrees that should keep my motor plenty cool. By the way this regulator is water cooled on this particular engine if you were wondering what the thermostats might have to do with the regulator. It is unlike a merc that has no cooling system for the regulators. Im hoping that the the second regulator just burned up due to the fact that it was faulty.

it would be my understanding that the stator should put out way more voltage than battery voltage and the regulator 'regulates' it down to 13.xxx volts. if it didnt, then you wouldnt need a regulator? thats the way ive always understood it...could be wrong

Stator voltage often will read 11-12 v at idle.
With it at full wot that regulator knocks it way down,as any dc motor when spun faster produces more and a stator is but a winding.Its all tied to rpms .
If a wind generator(windmill) is rated 12 kw 48 volts at 70 mph wind,normal output is quite less,amperage at much less voltage,until no wind occurs and no voltage.Same with the outboard motor the less it spins the less it puts out,and vise versa therefore regulated.
Exceptionally hot summer in most areas,possibly just went on its own.
It does dissipate heat and is in an enclosed area.

the stator should put out around 18v the regulator drops it down to 13v. the stator is performing as intended. The bad stator that i had was generating 36v thats how the first two regulators burned up. but i cant figure out what caused the third one to burn up.
