Default What would YOU do???

Ok here's the situation. You see some shad busting the surface and swimming quickly around the surface in a school. It looks like the bass are chasing them. What type of bait/lure do you throw?

Lipless crankbait, jerkbait, top water of some kind. Maybe drop a spinnerbait down below the school too.

I'm definitely digging the swim jig and spinnerbait idea

Zell pop, swim jig and shallow crankbait or wake bait have worked for me.....for the cranks be sure to match the hatch best you can.

Soft plastic swimbaits. But really it's whatever moving bait you like to catch fish on. Personally, I throw swimbaits, swim jigs, and spinnerbaits when this is happening. And don't be afraid to throw a bigger jig or big worm and dragging it across the bottom... Sometimes it's the smaller fish actively busting the surface, and the bigger ones are staying down on the bottom.

Super spook Jr, fluke, 3 or 4 inch grub on a jighead are my personal favorites for schooling fish. They really like the Super Spook Jr. around here.

The lake I fish most often I run into this a lot. The 3 lures that work best for shad busting bass are an Xcaliber 3" popper wworked agressivly, a super Spook Jr. and a soft jerk bait like a fluke.

Well I'd have to say thanks for the answers and that I'm definitely going to be breaking out the spinners, swim jigs, and spooks the next time I see this. And seeing bluebasser's double spook catch sure won me over haha.

LOL, look closely that is paint or carpet missing on a aluminum boat!
About half of those rods would end up in the water if that would've been me! lol
BTW, I favor the super spook JR or Sammy's also.

Whatever you have tied on that might work. You have to be fast. I usually will have a finesse rig with me. Lately, I have been using wacky riged senko type baits. They work pretty good for tossing to spots that just look good, they are a good follow up bait for a missed strike, and they have caught a lot of bass for me when i see them busting shad. I just toss the Senko right in the boil and let it sink. Now, if this is something that is widespread and you have time to rig up for it, I would have a topwater bait, a slow falling bait, such as the senko, and also a bait to look for big fish under the action. tail spin baits used to be used for that and should still work good, Johnson spoons also work well.

See I've never tried a spoon, and to be honest haven't even looked into em. So I wouldn't even know where to begin with a spoon. Spoons are one of a couple things I've never tried before.

Always an Iovino Splash It to start. Then it's a progression on down to a Spook then a spinnerbait. One will always catch them.

shad colored crank or swimbait... as close to the color of the present shad (chartreuse, silver, white/silver) as possible. Never fails for me.

One thing to watch out for is sometimes if the larger lures don't catch anything, try using smaller lures (2. to 3" range) as it may be smaller bass chasing them, or the larger bass are feeding on lots of small shad.

Shallow runner crankbait or a trap in sexy shad.

Well I went out this evening to try the suggestions and this is the results... The spinnerbait and topwater worked well, but the crankbait kind of failed the test... Also pitched in the ol' jig n pig and got some decent bites in the thick stuff. Oh and my uncle caught a bluegill with a rebel pop-r which was pretty nice lol.

The bigger fish will be at the bottom of the school herding them to the surface. I like any one of the suggestions that will fall down through the school and can be retrieved deeper.

Nope, that's the spot were my trolling motor pedal has worn the paint off the deck of my boat. I've caught bass on topwater with snow on the ground before though, mainly at powerplant lakes. I have a picture of a friend of mine with a white bass double on a rattletrap with snow on the ground from last winter. No snow in the picture because of the hot water outlet but trust me it was there!

I have never found this to be true.
