Who's your "daddy" crawdads that is

Over the past couple of weeks I have been noticing more and more parts of crawdads in my local ponds. A couple of my recent fish also had them in their mouths, so this helped with bait selection.
I usually throw paca-craws on an owner shakey head, but it hadn't worked this week so I started trying to get creative.

The technique that worked best for me was using storm crawdads with a nail weight in the tail. I nose hooked them with a small drop shot size hook. They took forever to fall, but once on the bottom I was able to trigger a bite by simply raising and lowering my rod tip about 8 inches. When I tested this in the shallows, the dad pretty much stayed in place, but his claws would raise up like he was defending himself.

I don't know that it will work everywhere, but I figured I would pass it on.

When they're feeding on crawdads thats when I usually throw a jig or a Zoom super hog. I've never tried the storm crawdads.

Try Jackall´s Sasuteki or Cover Craw, they sink pretty fast ( no need for a nail weight ) and they can be rigged backwards to make the bait sink away from you.

Thanks Raul. I really like the Jackall baits, so I will have to check them out.
The heavy grasses are why I didn't go with a jig. I wanted something that would sink but still rest on top of the grass.

Great tip that I will try..I like the jig myself at least 1/2 oz with a rage craw,not as many bites but the ones you get are good fish.

Neither of those digs into the vegetation Cass, if they land on vegetation the bait sits on top of it.

Cool idea cass. Surprisingly, craws are very good climbers, and can actually climb up the weeds if they want to. But I guess what we don't know is if they actually do climb up the weeds. Either way, sounds like a cool new presentation that I'll be trying next year.

That sounds like a good technique.

Anybody ever try the Power Bait Chigger Craws? Those are my go-to jig trailer when the water is warm. The claws have a very good paddle action when moving fast, such as on the drop with a 1/2 jig or when reeling back in for another cast.

I haven't tried any Paca Craws yet, but I will in the Spring.

Those and the Rage Craws are the only ones I use. You're right, the 3" and 4" chigger craws make great trailers in the summer.

I was mistaken when I said that they were storm craws. Upon further review these are the Yum version.

Whenever I use a craw it is generally a T-rigged Paca-Craw, but I have been known to catch large fish with a Rage Craw also.
