Default A look back at 2013

Well, I obviously didn't branch out much lure-wise in 2013, but I did catch more LM, SM and total bass than I ever have in any previous year.

Feel free to share pics of your good ones from last year!

My best Largemouth of the year came on July 10th while fishing with my nephew. It was 4lb 7oz, 18.75" and caught on a Zoomie.

And a month later on August 10th I landed my biggest Smallie of the year -- 4lb 4oz, 18'5" and caught on a Pop-R.

Those are a couple of nice specimens. I have always been impressed by how healthy your fish look.

Dean, your record keeping never ceases to amaze me. I could never invest the time or effort in doing that, it's just not in my nature, which is probably why I find it so astounding anyone could do something like that. Heck, my tax records aren't that good.

For me, record keeping like that is pretty easy and something I really enjoy. But on the flip side, I am not mechanically inclined at all. I could never in a million years even begin to do stuff like you did with the upgrades and mods to your kayak and trailer last year. So...I just try to take the gifts I've been given and make the most of them.

Dean do you fish all of those baits equally? Has the record keeping enabled you to an advantage in any way other than what works the best for you? Sometimes I revert back to what works best and don't use other methods.

No, not even close to equal use among the baits. The two things I enjoy the most by far are throwing soft plastics (zoomie, wacky-rigged senkos, dropshot) and using topwater (especially the field mouse and poppin' frog).

I'd say the amount I use a given lure is pretty close to the percentage of bass I catch on it. 86.5% of my bass last year were caught on soft plastics (zoomie, DS, wacky & T-Rigged senko, hyper-stick), so I guess that makes me pretty much a one-trick pony. I did throw a jig & pig a fair amount last year, but just didn't seem to have the luck with it as I did the two prior years.

I don't think this breakdown or tracking what I catch them on really tells me anything I don't already know or gives me any sort of advantage. It does, however, help me look back and wonder how my frog fishing has gone so downhill the last few years. I often use a field mouse instead of a frog now, but I need to get back to throwing a frog again more this year.

I am a mind-numbingly slow, boring kind of fisherman compared to most people I know, but that's what I really enjoy. I could spend an entire day trying to make an endless number of precise casts into a tiny little opening in pads or reeds, or under a dock, or next to any other sort of cover.

I track a whole bunch of other stuff besides just the lures I'm using, and what I find most useful is just the location on our lake. I like going back at the end of the year and summarizing where we caught all the fish and where we caught the biggest ones. That has helped me identify some spots I didn't realize were as good as they were and we can focus on those even more the following year.

While i didn't keep track of the total numbers of fish I do keep track of the number of fish I caught that were over 5 pounds. Total fish over 5 pounds were 32 on the year. Total over 6 pounds was 9, total over 7 pounds was 1. If I was going to guess total numbers would be some where over 1000. I got my biggest fish of the year a 7.4 lbs on a 6" Green Shad Sink-N-Fool and you can still see that bait in the fishes mouth.

I catch about 70% of my fish on Sink-N-Fools, about 10% on topwater baits (My topwater mouse. horney toads buzzbaits, or hardtopwater baits) 10% on crankbaits ( mostly KVD 1.5's, Husky jerk's and Rapala's, but I get a lot of my S.Mouth on the Rebel craw cranks), 5% on jigs (mostly on my slow fall and a few others) and the last5 % on a wide variety of baits. Some of my other big fish came on My Super Slow Fall jigs, the KVD 1.5 crankbait. My topwater mouse bait. Most of the other big fish all came on Sink-N-Fool's, Here are some of my other big fish;
